Hello,

I am 15 years of age and have suffered with acne for what seems like forever. It is an ongoing problem which ruthlessly attacks my skin. It seems like no matter what I do it doesn't go away. I have tried nearly everything over the counter from Salicylic Acid, Benzoyl Peroxide, Witch Hazel, etc.. After talking to people I go alot of suggestions saying to cut my hair. Which I did. Didn't help. I wash my face twice a day and medicate/mousturize accordingly. I have tryed many approaches to solving my acne. I have tryed the all natural approach with just washing my face with water and a rag twice a day. I have tryed to Gentle approach using products to help sensitive skin. I have tryed what I call the Warrior approach where I have used a 10% BP Cleanser, 2% SA Pads, and a 10% BP spot treatment. My skin is very oily and I have lots of blackheads covering my face. This is very embarassing and makes me not want to participate in any public activites. I am almost at a point where I feel like nothing OTC will work. But I have no insurance and can't afford to see a doctor. I have 10 days till school starts again and I want this cyst on my nose to be gone. It has been there for a while. I use all noncomedegenic products uncluding shampoo, and body wash. I think my acne is because of hormones. Is there any way to balance them? If there is any advice someone out there can give me please help!

I feel your acne pain!!
Yes, a trip to the dermatologist can be quite spendy, and because it seems like that is not an option for you, let me give you some tips. There are many products that come in sets, other than proactive. Clean and Clear has a system, as well as Neutrogena. Make sure you get the right one for you. If you have sensitive skin, get the sensitive skin kit, because even if you have severe acne and buy the severe kit but have sensitive skin, your face will be very angry with you and will not improve. These sets run around $20 and last for about a month, which is quite reasonable compared to buying many different products. Using a system also helps to decrease irritation that may happen from using different brands together. As for the hormones, sorry. You're going to have to be patient. There's not much you can do for that except get older and grow out of the raging hormone stage. Birth control is the only thing that will truly help control hormones, which can help those plagued by hormonal acne. Because you can't go to a doctor, this is not an option either, not to mention it's always a fun conversation trying to convince parents to let a 15 year old have birth control:)
So please be patient, and if you try a system, remember that you will not see results for a long time, but stick with it because these things take time!

Helpful Tips

Avoid Alcohol
Avoid rubbing alcohol or alcohol-based astringents and toners, even if you have oily skin. This can irritate skin and make acne worse. More
