Focalin oral vs. Focalin XR

I know that Focalin XR is a controlled substance and the prescription must be filled within a certain time frame or is considered invalid. Does the same hold true for the short acting Focalin?

I ask this question because my daughter is on both of these medications. I sent the prescriptions at the same time to our mail order pharmacy. The short acting prescription was filled and mailed to us; the XR was not.
