taking the plunge into adoption via DFS

I just made the call to the local DFS office to get information sent to me about adopting via the foster system. The county I live in has come under fire recently for the foster system so they are in desperate need of parents. I was told there are healthy newborn infants living in temperary foster care for 6 months to a year after TPR.

If you pay attention to national news about crimes against children... I live in Greene County, Missouri, where in 2008 a little boy was killed by his foster parent. So now the red tape to be approved is very very thick. I have to file an application to be approved to even apply to get into the system. There are 2 seperate background checks, as well as a full mental health evaluation, that's even before the home study is started. I do not begrude the red tape if it can prevent another death.

We're going to wait till the new year to start the paperwork because we are working on house repairs right now and I don't want the stress of both going on at the same time.

At the same time, we are also requesting information from several private agencies too, and I plan on printing up busness cards and flyers too.

I know this board isnt very active at all, but I figure I would post updates on our path, incase someone else is curious. I'll probably also create a blog, and if I do, I'll post the link here too.

Today: (10/8/10)
I got the call back from C. with the foster system. We talked for a half hour straight about diffrent things needed.
a condenced run down was that the proccess consists of first a mini background check, for child abuse/neglect and sexual offencives complaints. Then we'll get a packet in the mail with information and the initial forms. Once we return those, we'll get a call from a caseworker to have an initial home visit and interview. Then they'll do a full FBI background check on us both, and we can start the classes. While the classes are being taken (weekly) we also have to submit to physicals and get the pet's rabies shots up to date. During that time we also will have the Home Study conducted. Once the classes are done, then we will be put in the pool for placement.

I gave her the info needed for the first background check, and will be waiting for the paperwork.

Fiannakyn, I have been following some of you girls on the TTC 12 month board. I was apart of the 6 month board for a little bit, and will check in on the girls that had to move to the 12 month board. I just wanted you to know that you are being heard over here, and I hope to continue to follow your story. Congrats on the first step in passing the first backround check. If you do make a blog, I think it would be a great way for you to journal your experience and for others to learn from your experience. Good Luck!!!

just this last weekend I filled 4 large trash bags with junk, and 4 boxes of stuff to go into a yard sale. Now my Kitchen looks spartan and inviting, and my living room looks spacous!

we had our meeting/interview on friday.

Our paperwork will initialy say "Adoption/legal risk only, age 0-3, sibling goups of 2 ok, no major physical disabilities." With this classification, we may have a placement within a year after starting classes. Which should start Febuary if there is room. May if we have to wait.

hehe I also only get on webmd at work, I work in the health industry so its one of 3 outside websites I have access to, so.. (CDC.gov and weather.com are the others)

you should write down the website and check it out at home, I posted christmas tree pictures.

48 days till the Feb class. I figured its a good countdown to, cause either it'll be start of our classes, or I'll know I'll start the next class.

My mother in law is too excited. Her daughter is expecting the first biological grandkid in April, but she's still gathering things for all ages of kids for us and telling SIL hands off. MIL reasons that SIL will be able to get things for her baby in plenty of time cause she knows how long till x mile stone. So she doesnt need a walker or anything for at least a few months after birth, but we will have a VERY short notice for our child and no idea where the age will start. We may get an infant, maybe a 3 year old. And if we dont need the stuff for younger kids, THEN SIL can have them

FrmGirl replied to fiannakyn's response:
Well, that's good that your MIL is telling your SIL hands off. My parents and in-laws did the opposite. They didn't do anything for us until our son was here and then they had to scurry to get stuff together. I'm glad everyone is excited!

my mil is a planner. If she could plan well ahead, she will.

well I called the DFS today to check on the class starting this week. It was still full but they has so many people on the waiting list, they opened another class to start March 28th and we are on that list. (the regular scedualed next class was in June)

I'm really glad we're getting to have the first class before my niece is due to arrive. I dont think I could handle it if I was still waiting...
