Fish Algea Alergy?

My son has just recently started having respitory problems. I haven't been feeling the best either. Strange. Thought his allergies were due to the cats which we have had for over 5 years now. Strange. Started looking around for mold, to see if there was something else that could explain this sudden onset of problems. None. Strange.

I was just standing in my kitchen when I light bulb went on in my head. The only thing different in the last few months is the new fish tank set up. I poped the top in the filter chamber. GROSS. The algea build up was horrid, and wouldn't you know, mold was growing on the top of that.

Now, I do change my filter regularly, every month and change the water at least every 2 months. My son started coughing more when I cleaned out the filter unit tonight, so that got me thinking. Is there alergies to algea?
