Hello,
My son is 13 months old and had a reaction to peanut butter recently. He broke out in hives and his eyes became itchy and swollen. There were no respitory or tummy issues. I do not know anyone with a peanut allergy and this is all new to me. He has eaten foods many times that contain trace amounts of nuts and never had a problem. Must I avoid ALL peanut foods or is is actually a good thing to expose him slowly to food with some nuts as long as he does not react? Will giving him very small amounts actually build up a tolerance?

Thanks

As a person with a whole list of food allergies, I would say to keep your son away from all forms of peanut containing products (for now) & then maybe start to re-introduce it slowly.

The good thing though is, I consider your son lucky that this happened now (when he's still only a year old), though most kids have food allergies (peanuts, shellfish, etc.) & they at least have a chance to possibly outgrow the food allergies (if they're lucky).

As for me, I unfortunately was never that lucky. All my food allergies (peanuts, shellfish, etc.) all bombarded me at once (in January 2009). I never had any food allergies while growing up (& I'm now 29 years old). As a result, I stay away from peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, & even most fish (when possible).

As for very small amounts & him building up a tolerance to it, yes I think there is a chance, but would you really want to put your child's life at risk (if he should have a severe reaction)? I ask you that from a personal standpoint as a food allergy sufferer.

Hi

I wanted to share some info from WebMD on food allergies.
This info is from our Childrens Health News Center .
Food Allergy Reactions in Kids Undertreated

Look into this info as well from our Allergy Health Center .

Food Allergies and Food Intolerance I hope that helps. I also have to suggest you speak to your doctor about your son's symptoms and your concerns on this.

Best of luck and good health!
