I have been fighting anxiety for the last three months, I've only been taking Klonopin and at that I only let myself take a half of the .5 dose because I'm scared of how it will make me feel. My Dr. has wanted me to go on an antidepressant and I've been fighting him and myself on this hard. But now my bad day are starting to linger a little longer and I feel like my anxiety is making me depressed because of my situation. I feel like I'm losing the battle with myself and should go ahead and try the med. However I tried Celexa for about a week along with Xanax and I felt like sparks were going off in my brain. I ended up going to the ER with a panic attack. I need relief, but I'm so so scared of trying a new med and having some crazy reaction. What do I do? Any suggestions?

Patricia Farrell, PhD responded:
I'm not sure why your doc has not indicated to you that research is indicating that the best treatment plan is medication, if needed, and cognitive therapy. Medication isn't going to teach you anything about how you can help yourself, it will just medicate you. I think you would want to learn new ways to look at things, ways to help yourself calm down, etc.

Thank you for you're reply. Are antidepressants truley helpful for some people? I'm just scared of feeling like I did with the Celexa.

Usually, it's a trial-and-error basis when looking for a medication that will work for someone. When one that works is found, it is usually taken for a period of one year to establish stability. I'm not an MD, but that is my understanding.

Discuss with whoever is prescribing for you and see if there might be something you wouldn't have to take on a regular basis.
