I suffer with mdd/pts war vet, and anixety. I was on ativan 2mg daily for over 4 weeks. contarty to physicains notes in my chart in which it is indicated that I would be weened in near future, the md prescripted 30 day supply and no discussion took place re: weening. Thus when called office to indicate that supply was getting low, and my next appointment would have been 10 days after depletion, I did not hear from the office nor doc. I went into withdrawal consisting of nausea, vomiting headache mild psychosis, tremors (have had hx of seizures) taken via ambulance and treated. Afterward I spoke with md who was highly aggaitated indicting that with such a low dose It is rare for such withdrawal sx. We spoke for about 20min before an appointment in the lobby with other clients in which I had told her I was running out of the ativan. She stated she "had concerns with continuing to prescrib" did not go into any detail. After speaking with my therapist that same day I told her of the ocurrance. While checking out therapist asked md about the ativan and doctor indicated she was not going to presb further. therapist asked so then you want her cold turkey. md's answer "yes" then within 24 hours began mild withdrawal sx on 3rd day I have indicated above. What are the md's. morial/ethical respondsibilities? My belief is that she understood the ramifications of sudden stopage and also I feel that it knowing this mds actions were intentual and did cause physical withdrawl with tx received in er. Is it proper to d/c ativan adruptly if not why.

I think what this Dr did to you was medically wrong if she knew you were going to go through withdrawl from this medication then she should have prescribed enough of them for you to slowly withdrawl from them yourself at home so you wouldn't have to go through those withdrawl symptoms, i mean if you have to go to the hospital because of your doctor won't prescribe you medicine to prevent you from going through withdrawls something is wrong.

Patricia Farrell, PhD responded:
A physician cannot abandon a patient and prescribing a medication that can be addictive and then doing nothing to help the patient wean off it might fall into the category of abandonment. For that, physicians can be reprimanded by their licensing board, but I'm wondering if you are being treated at a VA facility. You can still discuss with your therapist how it might be best to proceed with this.
