Confused, please help

advisorbrandon posted:
I am a 40 year old man in the Financial Services Industry. My industry has taken its toll on me the last fifteen years. I have been on and off of Prozac. I am now dealing with symptoms of depression and anxiety. Unfortunately, I would like to also quit smoking soon. I have read that SSRIs such as Zoloft, Paxil, or Celexa could be good for my depression and anxiety, but Wellbutrin might be better for depression and quitting smoking. I am confused. Any comments?

Patricia Farrell, PhD responded:
Actually, Wellbutrin has been packaged as Zyban, a product intended to help people quit smoking. I do not know that any of the other medications you mentioned in your post were indicated for this.

I know that you are in a very stressful industry which has had its ups and downs and has created quite a bit of turmoil in people's lives. The fact that you indicate you experience both depression and anxiety, I believe, may be a direct result of your work.

Since you indicated that you have been on and off medication, perhaps you would like to try some self-help techniques. I believe this may be quite helpful and the technique that I am going to recommend should be done every day, several times a day even before you go to work and before you go to sleep at night. I'm referring to relaxation breathing and we do have a video tutorial in our Tips column on this. I would also suggest that, even though you may not feel like doing it, you begin to do some mild to moderate exercise if your PCP indicates this would be okay.

Recent research, and I might add quite a bit of research, has indicated how effective exercise can be in decreasing stress, anxiety and even depression. It is one of the most potent self-help techniques out there and I highly recommend doing something on a regular basis. We do have some exercises that are in our Tips column that do not require any type of equipment and which you can do anywhere. You might also consider walking up and down stairs instead of using an elevator whenever possible. Remember, I am suggesting that you run all of this by your PCP 1st.

I hope you find these suggestions helpful and that things do improve for you very soon.
