Oregonchicken posted:
Hello! This is the first time I have ever posted anything on websites/discussion forums like this. I to suffer from panic attacks and anxiety. I just recently found out that my dad suffers from it as well, along with his dad. Seems as if it went down the line. I have just recently have had a lot of anxiety and panic attacks. Seems as if they happen every night the past few nights. I try to calm myself down but it's so hard. I get a rapid heart beat, sweaty feet, hot and cold sweats. I shake and find myself walking around in circles just to keep myles off it. My heart worries me the most when I deal with this because I feel like I am having a heart attack. My chest gets very heavy and I get sharp pains. Does anyone else get these symptoms? Any feedback would be so much appreciated. Thank you!!!!

Welcome to the board. I know that you will be hearing from some of our members who will tell you that what you are experiencing is what they have experienced too.

You didn't indicate what you have been trying besides the walking to help with these instances of anxiety and I'm wondering if you would like to begin to use some self-help techniques. We do have an excellent relaxation breathing video tutorial in our Tips column and I would suggest you watch that. This would be especially useful during the day and you could also use it before you go to sleep at night. In fact, you should use it even when you are not having an attack and you should use it before you go to your bedroom to go to sleep so that you can help to ward off an attack. It's a way to help yourself calm down and you can learn to do it in just a few minutes and it only takes a few minutes to calm yourself down.

Also provide yourself with reassuring statements that will indicate to you that you are going to be okay, you will be able to sleep and you will be able to relax. Say this out loud. If anyone says something about it, just tell them it's something you've been advised to do to help yourself go to sleep.

I hope you do find these suggestions helpful and that you will also do some mild exercise, provided your PCP has indicated that would be all right. Also in the Tips column we do have simple exercises that you can do almost anywhere you happen to be.
