Not sure if it's anxiety

Hi I'm 19 years old and I think I have anxiety disorder but I'm not completely sure. Any and every time I think about or do go out of the house I get stomach pains kind of like butterfly's in my stomach and they don't stop until I actually get to the play that I'm going and get distracted by something there. It has gotten to the point where I just can't stand this anymore. Every time I want to go out or even think about it my stomach goes crazy and I just feel like going to sleep so it will pass. Besides that my mind is always racing all day. I think about everything and anything and obsess about my grades, people, etc. I have to be thinking about something all the time and I just can't stop. Even sometimes when I'm thinking I get that stomach ache and it doesn't go away for a while. I've also went to the doctor and gotten blood tests and everything, they all came back clear. My doctor did prescribe me hydroxyzine, however he does not believe I have any bad anxiety and that it will just go away but it's not going away. The medicine doesn't even help much. I still get bad stomach pains whenever I want to go somewhere which leads me to not wanting to go. I'm also 19 year old male 5'6 and I only weight 104 pounds. My doctor doesn't think much of it but I'm about 30+ pounds underweight and I'm pretty sure that's not good, but then again this might be me worrying about nonsense stuff again. I do however eat at least 3 meals a day and a few snacks from time to time as well. I don't know why I weigh so less. If someone has gone through this or knows what i'm suffering from i'd greatly appreciate it if they could reply to this. I'm just tired of these stomach pains, the constant thinking/worry, sweating, etc. I just can't stand this anymore any help would be greatly appreciated!

Patricia Farrell, PhD responded:
I am not an M.D., but you did indicate that your doctor had done bloodwork and everything came back fine. I'm wondering, however, if the blood work included tests for your thyroid function. If you are underweight and you are eating adequately, then I too would wonder what the reason would be for you to be underweight and to be anxious. As I said, I'm not an M.D., but I do know that thyroid problems can cause underweight and anxiety.

Perhaps one of the best things that you can do for yourself is to begin to use some self-help techniques such as those that we have in our Tips column. I would advise that you consider our relaxation breathing video tutorial and that you give this a try several times a day, every day, especially when you plan to go somewhere. The idea here is to cut the anxiety off before it reaches a point that it begins to create a problem such as your stomach pains for you.

If you do have some type of health insurance, you could also consider some biofeedback training with a license, certified psychologist. This will also help you to learn ways to control physical symptoms of anxiety.

I hope that things do improve for you very soon and that you feel much better.

Dr. Farrell
