Dont know what to do with this anxiety
vintagegal18 posted:
Well to start off , Im 17 years old , I been suffering from anxiety for years, I've always suffered from depression for as Long as I can remember . I remember when I was 8 years old I would say I hope I get hit by a bus and died , they would ignore me. Ive had a good life , I dont know why ive always been sad and depressed. My depression never NEVER went away. My mom actually spoils me and i just cant be happy. I get IRRITATED over everything, i just cant help it . My anxiety is BAD . All do is think of death . 24/7 my mind is about death or racing thoughts. I went to the therapist for a short while , he prescribed some medication for it , but my mom said no because she took the same medication and it made herbgain weight . Family members think that im just being a teen , but its somthing more . I'm tired of faking a smile and faking a laugh . I dont want to commit suicide yet . I wanna atleast try fixing it before i go that far . I think im going to die young anyways , I just try to sleep my life away, just tired of it all ,how can I cure this on my own ? ,without suicide.....

Hey, vintagegal18-
Given how long you have suffered from anxiety and depression, I would not recommend that your first line of action be self-help strategies. There are absolutely some great self-help books both on depression and anxiety. But I would first seek help from a mental health professional who specializes in the cognitive-behavioral treatment of anxiety and depression. Let them coach you, and let them recommend some workbooks to help you along the way. If you find counseling is insufficient, then you should have a session with the therapist and your mom to discuss the seriousness of your symptoms and the degree of pain you are in. Let the therapist help you convey to your mom that additional help, from medications, is needed.

the thing is , when i tell my parents this , they just say that its just my anxiety , and dismiss it. how should i let them know how serious it is ?

Sounds to me like they don't want to destroy their own illusion of everything being just fine. Them saying "it's just your anxiety" when it's gotten this bad is like someone saying "It's just your asthma" to someone passed out from not being able to breathe. It's obvious you know you need help. One medication may not work the same way for one person, than for another, and there are a lot of different theraputic strategies including different kinds of counseling along with medications.

She would have probably thought it disrespectful, but I would have been tempted to answer your mothers objection with the question "even if I gained a few pounds, I'd still be alive!" This is going beyond "just being a teen." You need someone to take your side here. Are there any school counselors, teachers, pastors, or family members who you could explain this to? Maybe they could help your family understand how serious this is.

I wish you the best. You deserve a better life, and you deserve to be taken seriously.

ive went to the therapist last year for a week , they wanted to put me on meds ,but my mom gained alot of weight of the meds so i couldnt. my anxiety was sooo bad ! , i spent hours checking stoves and locking doors. Should i talk to the school ? , I really dont know, if i go to the therapist theyre going to try to give me meds , and its gonna all end up the same . my anxiety calmed down a little bit , its just these thoughts of death every second , for 9years. I dont want to stress anyone out, i try to be as happy as i can be , everyday im just closer to ending it, i dont want to hurt my family , if i end it theyll be shocked .Somebody please help ....
Reid Wilson, PhD replied to vintagegal18's response:
Hey, vintagegal18-
Now you are talking about checking stoves and locking doors. Those are the types of symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). If that is one of your current complaints, then there are absolutely self-help and treatment strategies to help you recover. Thousands upon thousands of people have recovered. But so many therapists are not aware of the treatment or have not been trained in the treatment. So their first line of defense is to suggest medications. Medications are NOT your only option. If you will send me an email, I will help you find the name of a specialist nearby. Then you can decide if you want to see them. In the meantime, you can go here to read about OCD and self-help strategies. You can use that website to help your mom understand that what you are going through is real and serious.
