Buspar and alcohol

has anyone taking buspar? I enjoy having a few drinks on the weekend. My Dr. told me that was fine, but I am still hesitant. Has anyone taking buspar and drank? Please let me know ty
valkyriescream responded:
Yeah I have been on Buspar for over a week now and have drank with them. The most I had was two beers and I was fine. I like to drink a bit on the weekend that's it.
Dr_Patricia_Farrell responded:
Caution should be the watchword here. Any med taken with alcohol can be a problem because almost all meds have to go through the liver to be broken down and that's exactly where the alcohol goes too. So, there's a fight in the liver for passage and, because of this, the med builds up in your system since it can't be broken down. The result is something like a massive dose of the med and this has consequences.

Let me know how buspar is for you. I just started it as well. I am very sensitive to medication, but so far this has been fine. (knock on wood).
montani replied to valkyriescream's response:
I drink a little while taking Buspar as well, but I did notice some increased anxiety one night. Maybe I need to lay off the alcohol as well.
Patricia Farrell, PhD responded:
It's never a good idea to drink alcohol when you're taking any type of psychotropic med. Some of them can have extremely bad effects, but not everyone is aware enough of this.

The best advice is to avoid alcohol.
