Biaxin and nausea

pljohns posted:
Last Wed. I thought I was getting the flu. I work for a primary care doc, but he refuses to me any help-even though he files my insurance and gets paid, he still refuses. Anyway, after work I was forced to go to an urgent care because I felt so bad. I didn't have the flu, but did have a URI and my lungs were already rattling. He put me on Biaxin for 10 days, gave me a refill on my albuteral for my neb and a script for prednisone. I got them all filled, but didn't take the pred.(and I told him I wasn't because I've had to take so many steriods lately).

Anyway, my URI is better, but the nausea for the biaxin is kicking my tail. I finally took 1/2 phenegran last night and ate some rice-the first food I've had since last Tues. night. I've been able to keep down a bite of toast here and there but it never even adds up to a whole piece of toast in a day. The phenegran kept the nausea away enough that I slept last night without waking up feeling TERRIBLE, but I can't work and take it-not even 1/2 of it. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do for the nausea? Sweet tea and gatorade is about the only liquid that stays down.

I've thought about calling my old PCM and seeing if he would call in a script for tigan, but I don't know if he will. I'm in between PCN's right now so I'm sort of stuck. The doc I work for knows I don't have a doc right now, but he doesn't care. PLEASE HELP! I've lost 7 lbs in 6 days.

That does not sound fun. I am so sorry you are going through this.

Another thought is that the drainage may be contributing to the nausea, although Biaxin is nasty stuff and certainly does cause its fair share of nausea. I hate the stuff, almost as bad as I hate pred! The sad thing is that it works when other stuff won't, just like pred. lol

Another thought is that you may have the stomach bug that is going around on top of the respiratory gunk.

I would suggest that you try to eat a little more rice or the B.R.A.T diet - bananas, rice, apple sauce and toast. Egg noodles are good too. Stick with the plain white rice for now until you can keep more liquids down. For me sometimes the empty stomach adds to the nausea and keeps me from eating. But if I force just a little bit of something down, I will start to feel better eventually.

I know it isn't good, but sometimes I am glad for a stomach bug because it forces a diet on me. lol I have no choice but to lose a few lbs. Not the best way and it usually comes right back as soon as I get well. Seven lbs is a bit much for 6 days though.

It is strange that the doc you work for won't see you at all. I have always heard the opposite in doctor's offices. I have several friends that work in doctor's offices and they tell me that the doc will call them into an exam room if they are sick - insist on treating them. I think part of that is that the doc doesn't want his staff getting their patients sick and also, not a very good rep for the doc if he doesn't take care of his employees. I know one of my docs chases her employees down for treatment and even nags them about some stuff. lol That is one of the assumed perks of working in a doc's office.

Is there a particular reason why you left your former primary care provider? I would say go see them anyway. They at least know your history. If you haven't seen them in a while, they may not be able to write a script for you.

Feel better soon. Take care.

Well, I ended up stopping the Biaxin-I've lost 7 lbs in 6 days and couldn't keep anything but sweet tea down. Enough was enough. As soon as I quit taking it, guess what is back? I sound like a frog and absolutely can't breathe. I BEGGED the doc I work for to see me yesterday since I couldn't get in with anyone-he told me to use nasonex once a day and that should take care of it. Never mind I'm wheezing to beat the band!

I've got an appt. with my old PCM at 9:45 this morning. I am changing PCM's because even with the first appt. in the morning, you are still in his office 3 hrs later. His staff is terrible and you leave messages and never get a return call. He's the only hope I have now so I'm off to sit in his office this morning.

Oh, the doc I work for is so intent on money that he won't see anyone that works for him without them paying the co-pay and the insurance getting filed. I'm all for him getting paid for his work, but there have been plenty of times in the last 6 years that I should have stayed home, but came to work because he didn't have anyone else in the front office. I pull double duty as office manager and a full time job in the front office, not to mention having spent countless hours developing a web for him that he has yet to pay me for.

You either do things his way or he refuses to write you scripts for meds. He did that to me with migraines, so I quit seeing him. I only see him now in emergency. I normally go to urgent care instead of seeing him, but I felt so bad yesterday my front office staff ask him to see me. There are NO professional courtesy's in this office-never have been and never will be. That's why I go elsewhere. If I'm paying for a physician, I at least want to be seen by one that's interested in the patient-not just the money.

UGH!!! He is in medicine for the wrong reason. There are too many doctors that just want to get rich. The best doctors are the ones that are passionate about what the do and helping people be well.

Have you thought about looking for another doctor to work for? There are lots of postings for medical staff on career builder, monster, and indeed. With your experience it should be easy to find one. If you are interested, you might also check local hospital sites. Just a thought, then you wouldn't have to put up with his antics.

Feel better. It is bad that you have to put up with that.

You need a new job!! I am an NP and will help/treat my office staff ANYTIME!! THEY MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR ME TO DO MY JOB!!

I have delt w ton of nausea. I have several ideas for you:
1-Diet wise: The BRAT diet is for diarrhea, but you can't go wrong w bland foods. If very nauseaded do clear liquids. Gatoraide or even 1/2 water, 1/2 gadoraide for severe nausea. sip slowly.

2-Med wise carafate is my personal savior. It protects the stomach so very helpful when on pred. or other meds. I take it 4x a day everyday. I was nauseas for 6 weeks post hospital stay and like you was so sick and dropping weight, one dose of carafate and i was wanting my morning coffee again. The as needed med that i use is zofran. It has no side effects (nor does the carafate) and is a top notch nausea med., generic is fine. If you need something bf getting in w a doc try benadryl. If you are over 100 pounds you can take 1-2 tabs (25mg each) every 6 hours. It is very sedating but commonly used in chemotherapy patients to stop nausea. The generic is fine and cheap.

Hope that helps.

Thanks so much for the info on the nausea. I finally ended up stopping the biaxin-I just couldn't tolerate it and I knew I needed some food in me. I stopped it and woke up the next morning with the junk again. Obviously it wasn't gone!

I'll have to get some carafate to keep around. I take another med that I take at night because it makes me so sick. I sleep through the nausea, but sometimes I get up during the night with sick kids etc and usually end up more sick then they are.

I did get in to see my PCP and he gave me Avalox for 7 days. I can handle that med with no problems. I'm finally feeling MUCH better today. I"m doing the atrovent/albuteral neb twice a day for the next week and then back to prn.

It's nice to be able to eat again!

Nausea is a very common side effect of Biaxin. If you can not take the medicine as prescribed, notify your doctor who will advise you about what to do. This is a common issue with antibiotics so your doctor should certainly not be upset and should be able to help.
