Carbon Dioxide Levels
AyameJade posted:
Have any of you with asthma seen if your carbon dioxide levels when taken by blood are abnormal? I am seeing an Endocrinologist for excessive insulin levels (with no blood sugar issues). A strange thing that has come up on one of my lab tests was low carbon dioxide level, 14 with 21-33 being normal. I checked back at all the blood work I've had (those I kept) in the last 5 years and it shows I have had this problem the whole time. It varied from 17 - 19 with occasionally being in the normal range of 22-26 (rarely). I have a lot of blood draws because I was diagnosed with acute leukemia 5 years ago so I had a lot of blood draws to look at.

My question is this: Could it be asthma? What i've read about carbon dioxide levels is that they are usually low when someone is hyperventilating - like during an asthma attack. Asthma is prevalent in my family. My cousin died when she was 8 of an acute asthma attack and my sister suffered from it all through her childhood (its been much better in adulthood). I don't seem to have the same symptoms that she did, she had a pretty characteristic wheeze when she had an attack.

My endocrinologist just didn't know what to make of it and I don't know either. Any thoughts?
