Ok, I know you have Gestational Diabetes so I need some advice. I wasn't diagnosed with it as you know but was told to cut back. So I am trying to watch the sugar/ carb intake.... so what's left to eat??? Can you give me some ideas of good meals? I am at a loss and I can't eat the same crappyness every night! Your help would be greatly appreciated! And what makes satisying snacks? I used to eat a small ice cream every night or have a few cookies... I miss them!

Hey Melinda. Sorry I haven't been online in a couple of days. Actually, I was diagnosed w/type 2 diabetes at the start of my last pregnancy, BUT GD and type 2 are usually treated the same. Honestly it is all about watching your carb intake. I usually go by the following:
35 Carbs for Breakfast
40 for Lunch and Dinner
15 x 3 snacks daily.

It's supposed to be like eating 6 small meals a day, but w/my lifestyle (working 12 hr shifts and a toddler) it isn't happening...lol. I just try to do the best I can. My normal day is
BF
whole wheat pancake w/sugar free syrup
1 slice of bacon
decaf coffee
OR - on the go BF
1 Sausage McMuffin from McD's
decaf coffee

Snack - 4 Peanut Butter Crackers

Lunch
Ham & Cheese Sandwich
Reduced Fat Cheeze Its
1/2 Bananna

Snack
Pretzels and String Cheese

Dinner
Any Protein
Veggie or Salad
Fruit (small amounts because natural sugar will increase your glucose fast)

Snack
Ice-Cream (Any kind really) The KEY is portion control. I eat one small cup. My glucose does better w/ice cream then w/fruit.

Great snacks is anything PROTEIN (cheese, cheese and more cheese...lol). Also green beans are a great veggie because they are known to help w/insulin resistance. My diabetic counselor suggest that sugar substitues are okay, HOWEVER, I stay away from them as much as possible.

The point is that it's okay to have the "bad" stuff. It's about limiting and portion control. Try to eat at the same time everyday if possible and regulating your system. I also drink LOTS of water daily. Usually between 84 to 100 fl oz. Other than that, I allow myself only decaf coffee a couple times a week and very small amounts of OJ here and there. NO Sodas!!!

Oh and the best I've found is adding lots of fish to my diet. I try and have Salmon or Tilapia once a week. I get burned out on chicken.

I cheat at least once a week. Big hamburger and fries. It is not going to hurt you and baby and actually will make you do better through out the week if you know that on Friday you can have that big craving. I end up doing so good during the week that I lucky to eat 1/2 the burger and more than a couple of fries.

Tons of hugs. Stressing about it is actully worse than just eating it. Honestly, stressing will increase your glucose numbers. Just be deligent about watching what you eat. OH and exercise is the key!! Even 20 minutes of walking 3xa week is good. Lowers my glucose every time. Let me know if you have any other questions!!!
