I had a doctor appointment today. I'm at 36w5d. I'll be term on Sunday (whoo hoo!!!)
I lost 2 pounds this week. Bringing me to a total of 20 lbs gained this pregnancy. My blood pressure was high again and in this record heat wave, my legs and feet are swelling terrible. Other than that, everything is great. Little girl's heart rate was 138 BPM. She is head down and fully engaged in my pelvis. I'm dialted to a 2 and effaced 50%. Here is where I need some help... My OB strongly suggests that I be induced at 39 weeks. Mostly because of the swelling and BP issues. It's not severe enough to make a big difference, but my OB said especially in the heat, she recommends it. She also said that at 39 weeks, she has never had an induction that needed to be a c-section due to the labor not progressing. She has a 100% success rate. So, what would you ladies do if you were in my situation?
I was hoping to go into labor on my own. I have heard that inductions cause more painful contrax? I'm just curious to get some opinions or if anybody who has been induced could share their story, I would really appreciate it. DH and I are going to talk more about it, but my OB wants my decision at my next appointment.
TIA!
Glad that your LO is doing well and that you are engaged and dilating!!!
In regards to your question, I'll explain what my doc explained to me about induction...
You're at 35 weeks and a 2, fully engaged already. MOST of the time, inductions do not work out because the mother is not making any progress on her own. Because you ARE making progress, chances are that an induction WILL work for you because you have a "head start" so to speak.
Inductions DO cause more painful contractions...however, since you're already at a 2 and epidurals are usually given at a 3 or more, you shouldn't have to endure too much pain (if you are going the route of an epidural)... You'd be surprised what your threshold of pain is... Even with pitocin, I declined the epi until DD was in distress and HAD to have c/s.
The question I have for you is: Do you trust your doctor; do you truly believe that she has your best interest in mind here? High BP and swelling is NOTHING to play with when you're NOT pregnant, let alone when you ARE... Wanting to induce is VERY common for your issues...You're saying your BP was high...does that mean it was high for "you" for HIGH according to the doc??? Do you have protein in your urine?
Look on the bright side: Since you're already a 2 and fully engaged, WHO KNOWS! Maybe you'll go into labor on your own BEFORE your doc wants to induce!
When I was PG with DD, my doctor SWORE (on Friday) I wouldn't go into labor over the weekend - I was a fingertip at 38 weeks...my water broke that Sunday night...you never know what could happen.
Good luck with your decision...Talk to your DH and talk with your doc about your reservations - that's what she's there for.
HUGS!!!
I hope that she comes before then. That would be great.
My BP has been between 120/70 and 150/90, which is kind of high. It's just not consistantly high. My normal BP is around 110/60. So my BP now is higher than my normal. Techinically, an induction (as of right now) would not be medically necessary at 39w. I would be more for my comfort. There isn't any protein in my urine, so it's not pre-e. My doc really thinks that the swelling is just because of the heat. We are having a long running heat wave right now, with now relief in sight (for now).
I am mostly afraid of prolonging the labor process. Of course there's no saying whether or not the process would be shorter or longer than if I went into labor on my own vs. an induction. I was hoping to go into labor on my own and labor in my own at home in comfort, as long as it was safe to do so.
I absolutely trust my doc. I have been seeing her for 6 years and has never done anything that I didn't care for. This is a really tough decision... I'm mostly afraid of the unknown. How long the process would be or if it would be more or less painful. I'm going to reseach the pros and cons a little more and talk with DH.
Thank you for sharing your views with me. I really appreciate it!!!
W/DD I was induced at 38 wks 5 days, I went in the night before to start the cervidil, started the potocin at like 7 am the next morning. I was like 2 cm and 90% effaced, had painful contrax, Epi DID NOT work, but was only in labor for like 6 hrs and pushed for maybe 30 minutes. Not too shabby.
So, two inductions...so far, so good. I have always been pro inductions for after 39 wks non-medically. There is two many issues that could go wrong if you go over 40 wks also. People don't talk about that much. (Not wanting to start a debate either). If you trust your OB, listen to her. She wants you healthy and a healthy baby. Tons of hugs and let me know what you decided. Oh and of course I'd rather we all go on our own IF we lived in a perfect world, right??? Make the best decision for you, LO and DH!!
Glad thigns seem to be going well with you and baby girl. I know this is a little late, but I was induced at 38 week.s I was dialated to a 1 or 2 and nothing else. I failed the BPP and NST so I had no choice. I got the cervidel that night, and the next morning they started pitocin at 7. Labor was tough, but not awful. I pushed for 40 mintues andshe was born at 4:20. A 9 hour labor is not bad for baby #1.
Trust your body and like Rhonda said, the BP and swelling is serious. You seem to be naturally progressing, so hopefully you won't have to even deal with this issue. It is tough, but hang in there and good luck. Not much longer and you will have her in your arms and it is so exciting!
Take care of yourself and keep us posted.......
