Allergic Reaction - Need to whine
avatar
Megkate3 posted:
Sometimes I feel like I can't catch a break . . . With DD1 I had an allergic reaction after my c-section. They couldn't figure out what it was from, so they changed everything they could think of for this surgery. No reaction!! Then Friday, I went in to get my staples removed. The nurse took them out, put on some glue, and applied steri strips. 3 hours later, hives all over, oozing blisters all around my incision. Clothes constantly wet from the oozing. And of course, after hours on Friday. So ER or wait til Monday. So I called the on-call OB she told me to take off steri strips immediately, wash off glue, take 50mg of benadryl every four hours. OK, I have a week old and an almost 2 year old. 2 benadryl practically put me in a comatose state! So I had to cut back to 1 but was soooo miserable, I started taking 1 every two hours and drinking a cup of coffee every hour to stay awake. I get in first thing on Monday to see dr. It is a really serious reaction (which over the weekend spread all the way up my stomach and down my thighs, but only oozing where the steri strips were). So they had to put me on steroids. A huge dose, so no more breastfeeding. I've been bf during the day and formula feeding at night. It has worked out great and I'm so bummed that I can't do that. She said I can pump and dump this week to keep my milk supply, but DH went back to work today and I don't have the time to pump and dump and take care of Rylie and feed Charlie with a bottle. So I'm very whiny today. Within 48 hours the swelling and oozing should be better, so at 11:45am tomorrow, I should be able to not have a burp rag shoved down my pants to catch the ooze. Sheesh. Bright side, the last two nights, Charlie has gone to bed between 1030 and 11 and only gotten up twice during the night!!! It is like a miracle. Rylie didn't sleep until 10 months because of reflux, milk allergy, etc. So Charlie is easier so far in that respect. Sorry to whine. I know that at 9 months pregnant, you are all pretty miserable also. Hope all is going well and your little ones are doing great!! Thanks for listening!!

Oh wow Meggie! I'm so sorry about your reaction! Complain away... that sounds miserable! I'm glad you were able to get into the doctor and hopefully get some relief soon! I had an allergic reaction to surgical tape after I had a bunch of moles removed, but it wasn't nearly as bad as what you are describing. Ouch! I'm sorry about the breastfeeding issues as well. Take care of yourself!!

Ouch! I'm so sorry to hear about the infection/reaction Meggie. I hope that it goes away soon. I'm sorry that you can't BF for a while. That has to be pretty inconvenient. Way to go Charlie for only getting up twice over night! That's great! I hope that everything goes smoothly for you from here on out!

Meggie, you poor thing!!!!!! I began having a nasty reaction to glues when I was pregnant with DD. The dermatologist told me that I could take a 24-hour Claritin in the morning and another one at night...Kept me from getting groggy since I was working...

What did they use in place of the steri-strips?

This is NOT just a pregnancy board anymore, so whine away - it's part of the recovery process!!!!

Hope you feel better SOON!!!!!!

Hugs!

(((Hugs))) Meggie!!! That just sounds painful. I've heard of the glue causing allergic reactions. I totally feel for you taking the steriods. They make me crazy.

Don't get down on yourself about the BF. Just think that she at least got the colostrum (liquid gold) so that is a plus. I understand about not having time to pump. I knew w/my DD it would be a joke to try to do that PLUS I have an eleven year old son at home and pretty much no privacy...lol.

That is great about Charlie sleeping. Praying that it continues.

Hang in there. Those first weeks home are the hardest PLUS having to deal w/what you have to would drive anyone insane. Tons of hugs!!!

Rhonda,

The dr put me on 24-hr claritin yesterday along with the steroids. It has helped alot!! Not sure why the on call didn't give me that option?! They didn't put anything in place of the steri strips, so DH has to look at my incision morning and night to make sure it doesn't start opening . . . I guess steroids can affect healing so I have to really watch that incision for the next week. It is nice and closed now . . . Hopefully it will stay that way.

I wonder if mine was from the glue and not steri strips? Not sure how I would tell . . .

Thanks Nicki. I'm bummed about the bf, but it has already made things a little nicer, because I have more time for Rylie since Charlie can go longer between feedings. I think it is working out for the best, along I love that bonding time. Any extra time with Rylie is wonderful these days!! I can't wait until I can lift her again . . . that kills me!

How is Reese doing? She understanding that Madi is getting ready to arrive?

Ahhh, I can't imagine not lifting Reese...that would be so hard. Reese doesn't understand ANYTHING really. She'll point at my belly and say Madi Grace, but I'm pretty sure she isn't getting it.

Like I posted before, right not she is totally terrorizing our new puppy and it is really starting to scare me on what she is going to do with Madi Grace. She doesn't listen about the puppy so I know she isn't going to listen about the baby. We'll see...I'm praying for a big surprise.

Hugs Girl!!!

I think she will surprise you. Rylie crawls all over our dog (95lb golden retriever) and pulls her tail, etc, etc. But she is totally different with Charlie. She is really gentle, but there are some things to work on. If I am giving her the pacifier and Charlie spits it out, Rylie tries to jams it back in Charlie's mouth. That kind of thing makes us worry. I don't want her randomly shoving food or something in her mouth!!! I would never leave them unsupervised, just because Rylie doesn't understand. Anyway, it may be better than you think. And it is so hard not lifting Rylie (I cheated about 10 minutes ago . . .) because she doesn't understand why I can't hold her but can hold Charlie. I'm supposed to wait 4 weeks!! Impossible.

That's what I was thinking Meggie. I would def. cheat and have to pick up Reese. I think my biggest fear is Reese trying to pick up Madi Grace. I just have this overwhelming fear that I will put her in her swing her bassinet for a second and Reese will try and pick her up. Scares me to think of it.

How long will you be out of work??? I signed up for FMLA, but if my MIL is still babysitting I'm thinking about going back at 8 wks. I'm thinking by then I may need a break...lol
