drink water as you are having contractions it gets your mind off the pain and keeps you hydrated, also try swaying back inforth breathing deeply and letting out slowly.
I had back pain because my son was "sunny side up" and bouncing on the birthing ball relieved the pain for some time. If you end up with a your newborn "sunny side up" ask the nurse which side you should lay on to get him or her to turm, this worked for me and once my son turned I was pushing him out.
Also, do most of your labor AT HOME so your not strapped to the monitors the whole time. Once you go in to the hospital they are going to set you up on it for 20 min. or more.
