cervical fusion
marjorie1965 posted:
I have saw alot of post on lumbar fusions but not on cervical. After 3 very long yrs on alot of meds and every treatment you can think of I had a cervical fusion. C4,5,6. I am wondering if there is anyone out there who has had it, how long ago and any other fusions and still in pain? I have only spoke with 2 other people in my area that had cervical fusions and one person it lasted 10yrs before they had other issues and the second person had to have another one right away.
earlyretirement responded:
sorry you haven't recieved any replies by now, not as common a surgery. I didn't have a fusion just a cervical disectomy and had immediate relief and it's been 5 years now but that doesn't answer your question. How long ago was your fusion and are you feeling better now?
ily2bwilton replied to earlyretirement's response:
I am 54 years old and had my first cervical fusion c6-7 in 1990. In 1999 I underwent second fusion c5-6. Unfortunately, the last fusion of c5-6 didn't fuse resulting in a non union. I still have a lot of pain and recently went to pain management doctor within Kaiser Permanente. I was told that she could perform some type of injections or the placement of needles to the nerves in an attempt to burn them???? I am waiting for finanacial assistance to get approved and then will schedule this procedure. Does anyone know what this procedure is call? Its radio ......something or another.
earlyretirement replied to ily2bwilton's response:
hello ily2bwilton- I also have severe osteoarthropathies that effect my entire spine, in addition to the C6 cervical disectomy I have had, I have also had radio frequency ablation "so referred to burning of the nerve roots" in the lumbar area at three different levels bilaterally by a Very experienced Pain Management specialist and did have improvement, a decrease in the amount of pain and also know that these nerve roots do grow back in about 8months to 1yr in time. On the other end of that spectrum, I have read posts from other people that were not happy with their results and had permanent nerve damage from such a procedure. Just food for thought even though your problem is "neck" in origin a lot of people that have lumbar issues also have cervical problems and the back exchange board is a little more active if you want to post there also for more feedback?
marjorie1965 replied to earlyretirement's response:
I had some relief from the surgery for a short while but once again i am having not just aches which is normal but pain, i also have other issues going on with joints, i just had to go for a bone scan to see if i have ankylosing spondylitis or if my degenerative disks are getting worse.
