Many Disc Herniations
avatar
PearlGarden posted:
So my boyfriend and I got into a car accident a little while ago, and to make a long story short he got 4 MRIs showing 20 herniated discs. I have never heard of anything like this, nor can I find anything about this many disc herniations. He is in severe pain everyday. Physical therapy isn't working and his pain meds are not really working anymore. He is only 25 years old. Would surgery even be able to fix that? Doctors also seem baffled on what to do. Has anyone ever heard of this many herniated discs? If so, what did that person do? Thanks so much!

Sorry but I find this so hard to believe.I was in a car accident and when I wrote up I was in a halo brace-had all my cervical disk fused from c 1&2 down to T-1 and my neck had been broken.I was paralazed from the waist down for more time than I care to say and when my halo was put on the pins were located in the mucles and nerves for my jaw.I was in this halo for 8 months and spent another 6 in a hard collar and than a soft collar for a total of 17 months.I still have a ruptured disks at T-4-5 and when the doctors used my bone they removed to much on my left side of my hip instead of taking it from both. Now my hip region flexs at my SI joint & while in my halo I fell and ruptured 3 disk in my L region.I have had 3 redo's to remove fragments from my cerivcal area in the process my vocal nerve was trapped in tissue causing me to lose my voice.I am on my 3rd infusion pump and I know some say they do not work but let me say this when one of my new pumps was installed the dosage was to weak and all I could do is screem in the hospital untill I was given a shot of dilaudid. My accident was Oct 2,1979 so 31 years soon to be of hell 80 percent of the time.I have been to John Hopkins -Cleveland Clinic and all doctors have informed me I am in total body pain something I could have told them.I now have arthur so bad most remaining disk are about gone along with my pump I have to take oral meds which I try not to take.I have been to more doctors of all types - PT - Tens - bio feedback-self hipnoses-hipnoses- acue punture even had a stupid doctor put me in traction to try and releive the pressure on my remaining disk.I now am trying whats called - H-Wave with some results-much better than tens systems in my opinion. Some days I can walk but I need a cane for the times my legs just give out with no warning. All of my spinal surgeries were a must to have not self choosen and at times I wish nothing would have been done for me after the accident.I have noticed not many people mention EMG's which show not just nerve damage but where its at if you get the right doctor. My last MRI a year ago showed more nerve intrapment yet my doctor cut back on my infustion pump dosage which caused me more pain. But he upped my oral meds daa.I do not trust any doctors untill they trust me.I have had to many head games played by doctors so I have gotten better at their game.I have had doctors that will not shake my hand untill I sign a wavier that I will not sue them or that I have one spending-after 30 years of not ever sueing anyone.I have lost 50-60 percent strength in my arms and hands and have had 3 broken toes and didn't even know it untill my toe nails fell off.My PM doctor keeps trying to cut back even more on my infustion pump which really upsets me.The pt theripist tell me they have never seen anyone as bad as I am that can still walk most of the time. The headaces that I get are so bad I just can't take it and emionally I am at an all time low if that is possible. My wrist need to be operated on cuss of carple tunnel and I just laugh at the doctor. Do I have an additude yes but only because I feel so bad for each and everyone of you's posting here.If I could take your pain and carry it I would for you.My pain theshold is very high now.I can not feel the keys on this keyboard but I make do.In order to get rid of pain you need to have more pain-no pain no gain.My marriage is on the rocks at 61 years old now so I have no support at home.My kids are grown and gone. The doc's say I need surgery again but they will not do it and I would not let them if they could.Try everything except surgery it is only temp but in my case it kept me alive.I can not remember the last time I laughed only the last time I cryed.Sorry for dumping on all of you's but its one of those days for me.I mean what I said if I could take your pain away and carry it for you I would gladly no sense in so many being in pain if one can carry it all. Cheers to all and I wish you the best........

Oh no I understand and thank you for writing. It sounds terrible what you have gone through that is absolutely terrible, you have been through so much! You don't have to apologize for venting, everyone is on here to tell each others stories and vent because we all really care. My boyfriend was thinking about getting a TENs unit, but I have never heard of the H-wave. I did sustain some injuries. A woman ran a red light and t-boned my car and a hit a bus behind us at 50 mph. I don't remember the accident but I woke up with blood all over me coming from my head I had a pretty severe concussion, I bounced back pretty fast though so it wasn't so bad. Everyone thought I was the most injured so I'm sure it wasn't good that even though my boyfriend was in pain he was running around trying to help out. And I feel the same way, I wish I could take the pain away, nobody deserves to be in pain. Thats so awful too that you have injuries from the doctors as well. I really wish you the best and I hope there is something that can be done to help you, I wish there was something I could do..
