Treatment of pinched nerve in upper back?

I have a pinched nerve in my upper back near the left shoulder blade. I did not know that it was a pinched nerve, i thought i just needed to crack my back but after going to the gym one day and working out my back the pain really kicked in and the muscle near the left shoulder blade really tightened up and my movement was restricted.

I went to my university health center and I was told to take ibuprofen and ice my back. The icing doesnt seem to do much but I have taken Ibuprofens when I have needed to.

I am restricted in a few movements and I cant breath too deep without feeling pain in the left side of my chest.

Getting a doctor to evaluate me is bit of an issue due to distance and transportation so I am curious to know if the pinched nerve will eventually take care of itself on its own if I avoid any activities that can aggravate it AND if so how long will it take and will i be able to go back to my regular weight lifting routine?

hi ag1234 - welcome to the support group -

we do have a doctor that frequents the board when his busy schedule allows - but he has not been on for quite a few months -

the rest of us members are a supportive group suffering some sort of chronic pain issues either from failed surgeries or not being able to have surgery -

it's really hard to tell what is going on without you having a proper diagnosis - this would entail seeing your primary care physician - he/she will examine you and may order an x-ray - and even maybe an MRI - once you have the results those should be taken to either an Orthopedic Spine Specialist or a Neurosurgeon Spine Specialist - not saying you need surgery - but they are the best at reading the results - and they can then let you know what your treatment options are -

having a pinched nerve can mean that either the nerve has rocked in between joints/bone areas - sometimes they can work themselves back into place but there could be a more underlying cause - our backs are made up of lots of different muscles and nerve roots along with the spine/discs -

our muscles tend to tighten up when there has been an injury to our back - this is so that we avoid doing anything further to hurt the area. so muscle tightness could be means that something else is wrong - this could be a herniated/bulging disc pressing on a nerve root.

so even though you say getting to a doctor is an issue I would suggest that you do this as soon as possible - it's best to have a proper diagnosis before trying too many options. I would also suggest that you avoid any weight lifting until you can get fully diagnosed as this can cause more serious problems.

healing from nerve pinches differs for everyone - whereas it could be a couple of months to a year or as in serious cases nerve damage setting in - so it is important that you be diagnosed in order to find out why this is happening, why pain when u try to breathe and restricted on certain movements

please get this checked out as soon as possible - let us know what happens - take care - Joy~~

Thanks for the response. I spoke to a family member who is a Neurologist and since I do not feel any tingling in my arm and I do not sense and pain in my spine so he believes i feels it isn't anything too serious. He told me to refrain from the gym, if i want to exercise than I should do some speed walking but no running because the shoulder blade could irritate the area where my pinched nerve is. If in two weeks things haven't improved, he recommends that I go and get and MRI.
