Question for Doctor!

I have a cervical herniation in my neck, sections 5-7, i have had 3 injections which seemed to work for a week or so. Now I am having awful pain, in my left shoulder, arm down to my hand. Now its flaring up in my right hand. My question is that the pain management doctor said there are other options to surgery such as a Nucleoplasty, not to many people on the board have heard about it. I want your opinion, will this work or will i eventually have to get an operation to relieve the pain??? Help.

Nomaan Ashraf, MD, MBA responded:
Hello

The short answer is I would strongly advise against the nucleoplasty. There is minimal evidence that it is helpful and I would be very apprehensive about an unproven procedure being done that close to your spinal cord.

If your pain is that bad discuss surgery for your neck which could be an ACDF, cervical artificial disc replacement, or a posterior cervical decompression depending on what your MRI shows and symptoms are

Hi doctor, thanks for the quick response. The pain was minimal, well I had headaches, really bad hand pain on and off. After getting the injections, as I stated previously. Its all over my left arm, hand, shoulder, chest and right hand starting to feel effects. Not sure how long I can stand this, its making carrying things harder and typing. How long is a recovery time for the operation you mentioned. I really wanna get my life back on track with school and get my life in order. All your advice is much appreciated.

Hi
Im sorry for the delayed response.

A two level cervical spine procedure usually requires an overnight hospital stay. You should derive pretty rapid pain relief. People are typically able to return to desk work after this operation within a few weeks. You should definitely speak to a spine specialist if you are having this much trouble.

Hope you feel better
