hurts to sit

Hi, I have chronic myofascial pain in the left lower back (upper buttock area) and have been deconditioned or gotten weak. I am trying to get back in shape by walking hills little by little. But, when I sit on a hard seat it feels like my "butt bones" or sitz bones? are hitting the chair rather than my tissue. Is this because I don't have enough muscles? Will this improve with walking hills? Any other suggestions.

hi and welcome to the support group -

unfortunately, over the internet, it is hard to diagnose anyone - even our on-staff physicians will conquer with this. most of us are lay-people, ones who suffer from chronic pains.

what you need to do is discuss your pains with your primary care physician. he/she will examine you, possibly do an x-ray to determine what is wrong.

From there, if the problem persists or gets worse, you should see either an ORTHOPEDIC SPINE SPECIALIST or NEUROSURGEON SPINE SPECIALIST (does not mean surgery but they are the best at reading film results). they will further examine you and possibly order other tests (MRI/CT Scan etc.,) to see what the underlying problem is. from there, they will let you know what the best course of treatment(s) ae.

I have been diagnosed with myofascial pain syndrome as I mentioned. I'm MRI/bone scan normal as well as hip xray normal. I have been to an orthopedic spine specialist, neurologist, GP, physiatrist, pain doc and now I have an integrative pain medicine doctor who takes care of me but I don't see him for 12 weeks. This is a general question. Does not having enough muscle mass versus fat, on your behind cause it it be much more uncomfortable to sit on a hard chair? I didn't put in the details as I have been on here a lot and also thought the question a general one not a diagnositic one. I hope this helps.

I know nothing about what you are suffering, but I have chronic foot problems which cause moderate to severe pain. One of the issues I have is no fat pads on the bottom of my feet so basically there is no protection between my bones and the ground. Yes, it HURTS. I would imagine that less muscle would hurt your bottom too when sitting. Again, I'm no expert, just sounded similar to my foot problem and makes sense to me that without some kind of padding there would be discomfort. Good luck at your apt, too bad it's so far off.

Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry about your foot problem. Is there any new way to add fat or something to your feet. i know this sounds weird but they do grafting for burns so? Yes sitting hurts very much on a hard surface, a padded chair is ok. I'm working on building mucles so I hope it will improve this. It is like riding a bike when you aren't used to it, you get really sore. So, I hope with more work it will get better. I currently have foot problems too. My toe is infected and also the nail has fungus. I have been on antibiotics for a month plus an antifungal. I will probably have to get the nail removed next week or the week after. I am a bit scared and don't want to be set back from exercises as it is the only think helping my back problem too. Oh well, thanks for llistening.

That's why we're here, to listen and sympathize. I wear custom-made orthotics in my shoes to add the padding I need. They sure help! I guess in your case you can just use a pad. Sorry about your toenail. Feet can be such pains!
