Chronic Back Pain and Medications

Hi.. I am new here. Have been a nurse for many years and suffer from Deg bone and joint disease. I have taken narcotic pain relievers for many years and have been able to control the pain I have in my back from 3 blown disc and the pain I have due to sciatica. I have had the epidural injections several times with minimal relief. This last year due to a prank I was placed on probation. One of the probation conditions is that I can not have narcotics in my possession. I have a prescription for them but my probation officer stated to me that I can not take the medication and if I did I would be violated... Yikes! I know there is ultram tramadol etc... Has anyone taken these meds for pain and them actually work?? I have 3 years of probation and looks like it's going to be a long 3 years if I don't get some relief. It makes it very hard to work, sleep, clean my home or do anything for that matter. I have done the physical therapy and I have used a TENS unit and even tried meditation... Does anyone know of anything else I can do or any non-narcotic meds that have proven beneficial? I am desperate at this point and will try anything!!! I am also considering the acid injections in my back to kill the nerve endings!!
Thanks in advance!

hi and welcome to the support group -

there are other alternative treatments to medications - I think it would be best for you to see a PHYSIATRIST Pain Management Clinic - let the know that you CANNOT take narcotics of any kind - they do have other treatment plans that they can do -

being part of a support group, we as lay people, cannot tell another what types of meds to try and/or take - as the golden rule is what works for one may not work for another.

having narcotics in your possession is in violation of your probation, if that's what it says - and any pain clinic and/or your probation officer can have a UA done at anytime - so this is something that you need to remember - coming clean is the best thing for you to do - and the PHYSIATRIST Pain clinic can help with that by alternative treatments -

please keep us posted what you find out - take care - Joy

Hello,

I am sorry to hear about your chronic pain. My husband has had sever chronic pain for the last 8 yrs. and even though I do not experience the pain directly I do understand the kind of devastation it can do to ones life. I think you should get a couple of different opinions on your situation. I would call another probation officer , A lawyer and Pain Management doc. a doc that is on the board of medicine. If you have to take a drug test there is a test they can also due to test the levels of those prescribed medicines. They can not tell you that you can not take a medicine prescribed to you to make your life livable. Due to the Hippa Law in general. I think your probation officer may get a commission or bonus due to clients successfully completing their required probation. You have got me curious. Let me know what comes of this. No disrespect to you but I think your probation officer is not being completely honest with you. ** People ,leave information out on purpose. or do not know what they are talking about all the time. You see it every day professional people ,people we are suppose to trust. Lawyers, Doctors,Judges, Teachers , Coaches are lieing, hurting children and usually because they do not care or due to the all mighty dollar. I hope you get what you need. I have went through a similar situation myself due to courts , prescription medicine and child custody. Do your own foot work you will be amazed at the incompetence you see.

Thank You so much for your support gauthi8!
You were right! I found out a while back that my probation officer was in fact abusing her authority and she lost her job. As a probationer I am not allowed to have narcotics in my possesion that are not prescribed. My p.o. harassed me and had me living on edge 24/7. I went above her head and had my doctor write a letter saying that I had chronic pain due to the back, bilateral knees, and R.A. I have in all my other joints... After reviewing my case and the case notes that my probation officer had taken on my intake interview it showed that she knew I had those prescriptions and that it was for a reason. So that woman lost her job. I know as a probation officer they see people from all walks of life and some are lifetime criminals but that is not the case with me and with a lot of other good people who made mistakes. I think they should be made to take a class on respect and compassion. Anyone who works in the public should. I know though that there are even Dr and Nurses who should take it as well... But thanks you for your support and the comment. Your right. Ppl have their own agenda's!

for years I have tried everything I can to control my pain and it continually gets worst... meditation, meds, tens, pt, moist heat, ice, topical analgesics, traction, steroids, vitamins and i could go on and on and on even to the point of procedures. Now what was working for me someone was trying to take away and if someone is in pain and are getting relief from something then you leave it alone:) I got my situation taken care of and the probation officer and her supervisor lost their job for abusing authority and harassing me. It is sad that there is little compassion in this world...
