Question/issues 2-1/2 years post 2nd ACDF
Stacia718 posted:
I am about 2-1/2 years post my 2nd ACDF surgey and am having some odd issues. My 1st surgery was in 2003 to fuse 1 level. My last surgery was in 2009 to fuse the 3 levels below the 1st fusion. I have a 5-6 in vertical incision scar on the left side of my neck that angles slightly towards my ear. I still have that lump in my throat feeling and occasionally have issues swallowing. I am also experiencing a "tightening" of the the skin of my neck causing occasional "sores/zits/or????" to occur and am having issues with the hair on my scalp...pulling and irregular growth. My surgeries are considered failures (both of them) as I live in pain and still require medication to even consider functioning and cannot work anymore. I get wicked, evil headaches at the base of my skull causing light sensitivity, nausea, vomiting, and a new symptom loss of balance. My main concern right now (not that the other issues aren't very troubling) is the pulling and resulting issues with my skin (neck/face/scalp/hair) which have caused scaring and when the pulling is at it's worst distortion of my neck literally feels like my skin is being ripped off my neck/head pretty muc. Has anyone else experienced this is there any advice medical concerns that could help. (my surgeon has since left the practice...wondering why...and my current treating physician says it is just scar tissue....but the extreme extent of the issues has me more concerned.). Thanks for any!,,,,

hi and welcome to the support group -

I had lower back surgery and don't know that much about neck discs surgery and do not recall anyone with C-Spine surgery having this many problems but I would suggest that maybe you get a couple of opinions from both Orthopedic Spine Specialist or Neurosurgeon Spine Specialist - you may have to have updated tests (MRI, CT Scan etc) done - hopefully they can let you know what is going on and let you know what can be done -

please keep us posted - take care - Joy

I too am two years post ACDF surgery of the c-4 and c-5 removed. My balance has been very bad right after the surgery. And my right leg feels as if it is been wrapped very tight spasms and a lot pain. A numb feeling in the leg and the left hand. Also, neck pain. I am unable to work and I need a cane for assistance. I am getting the headaches and soreness of my throat. The doctors don't understand and the therapy is not helping at all. My Doctor doesn't think the second surgery will help.

Your stories are truley sad. My best freind has had quite a few C levels fused with fairly good results. He can't work, but he's still rasing his kids.

Stacia, I am sorry to hear of all the problems you are having with your surgeries.

I had a discectomy on my C5-6, C6-7 where they put in discs where I didn't have any, that surgery was in 2009 and it was done in the front of my neck a little off to the side. I had some swelling and a lump feeling in the throat for about a month until I was healed.

I had a 7 vertebrae cervical fusion C3-T1 done with laminectomy in June of 2011. They went through the back of my neck. I had 3 surgeries after the original one for different reasons but the last one was in Sept. 2012 to remove all the hardware. I was told for the amount of work they did on me it could take up to a year for all my pain to go away and the nerves to come back. I do get pain in the base of my skull called occipital nerve pain and I get injections of steroids into that area a couple times a year. I wear a tens unit during most days for the pain.

Both of my surgeries were done by Neurosurgeons. Since your doctor is no longer practicing can you seek a new Neurosurgeon for a second opinion? I feel bad for you. Deb
