Compression fracture

I am 48 years old, have Crohn's Disease and now have a compression fracture from the steroids I have been taking since December. The x-ray showed that the compression fracture was old, but the pain started on May 18th after I took my third injection of Cimizia (a TNF drug for Crohn's). I had reported back pain to my doctor, the two previous times I took my Cimzia injection , both in the month of May. The back pain and muscle spasms are now so severe, I have been out of work since May 18th. I am on Vicodin and Skelaxin and have an appointment with an orthopedist on June 13. I see my gastroenterologist on June 24. Any advice, questions I should ask the doctor would be appreciated.

hi and welcome to the support group -

I would find out more about the compression fracture - see if you can remember doing anything that injured your back - even if it was when you were a child - see if the Orthopedic is a spine specialist - there is a difference between Orthopedic Surgeon and Orthopedic Spine Specialist. They should do an MRI this way they can see what other disc(s) are affected by this fracture or how severe the fracture was etc.

sometimes, certain medications may attack an area that is already weak and this maybe why you are just now experiencing pain. the steroid injections help reduce swelling and also help reduce pain amounts.

I'm not familiar with the Crohn's meds so you may have to ask the Spine Specialist or maybe your medical physician about this.

Please let us know what the Orthopedic says and if they are a spine specialist or just a surgeon - It would be in your best interest to be examined by a Orthopedic Spine Specialist.

take care - Joy
