Pain in middle back radiating around ribs
brenda0621 posted:
I have degenerative disc disease and have had 3 back surgeries of the lower back. I have also had a nuerostimular placement. Recently (Last month and half) i have fallen 3 times on my back. Since the last fall, I have been having pin starting in my middle back and radiating around my ribs to the front. I cannot move, sit or lay without pain without hurting. It hurts to take a deep breath also. This has been going on for about a week. I have seen a doctor who did nothing and told me if it didn't get better I might want to follow up with my surgeon. My surgeries were over 10 years ago and my surgeon has since move. My question: Could I have a bulged or herniated disc that could possibly heal itself or do I need to find another doctor?

If the disc is damaged to the extent is pushing on a nerve or spinal cord it will not fix itself. Find some help quick!

hi and welcome to the support group -

Weav6385 is correct - bulging/herniated/ruptured discs do not heal themselves.

You should try to obtain all your medical records, if possible from the original surgeon. you should also try to get all your hospital records.

you should see either a Orthopedic Spine Specialist or Neurosurgeon Spine Specialist to be examined. Since you have a Neurostimulator in place you cannot have an MRI done but you can have a CT Scan done. The spine specialist will be able to see what's going on with.

please keep us posted what you find out - take care - Joy

am just reporting back that I finally had a CT scan which showed that I have spondylosis of both the upeer & lower spine with several Schmorl's nodes in the upper spine. Was refer to my surgeon and was told basically that they will treat with pain meds and muscle relaxers. he told me the schmorl's nodes is where the endplates break off the vertebra and the disk material ruptures to the disc below or above it which causes the inflamation & pain. I am having surgery to replace my nerve stimulator which has quit working sometime in the nest week. The pain is much better but was told that it may flare up from time to time.

hi brenda0621 -

glad you had the CT done - glad also you have having your stimulator battery replaced - hope this does help with the pains.

please let us know how your feeling after everything is done -
