Degenerative discs at 34

Hi, I'm new to this community. Please, excuse any errors in my posting. Recently, I was told that I have levoscoliosis. It was found during a CatScan being done for other issues..I also have Porphyria (HCP) and was having some stomach issues. A few months prior to this test, I began noticing a patch of burning pain on my spine (just below my thoracic area.. Not quite to the small of my back). I have a few bulging discs in my lumbar spine, but this was different. It got worse over a few months time.. And was actually sore to the touch. When I sit in a chair I often cannot rest against its back because of the bruised/burning feeling. this week, I am house siting and it is so much more constant, I think, due to the different bed. I'm assuming this is the levoscoliosis. It is now worse.. And, hurts more frequently. Often when I wake up in the morning, if I've curled up in my sleep.. That's the worse.

It's not excruciating, but it seems to have progressed pretty quickly. I did not have this as a child... And, I'm only 34. What causes this? Will it continue to get worse at the same rate? My doctor isn't too concerned.. But, I have neuropathy in my legs, already, due to Porphyria and bulging discs. I don't want to compound the issues.

I've seen articles that recommend sleeping with a pillow under the knees... Is there anything else I can do? Is this anyway related to genetics? I inherited Porphyria and Venus insufficiency.. Am I just poorly wired?

I know these are a lot of questions at once... Any info would help!

Thank you!

hi and welcome to the support group -

first - yes sleeping with pillows either under your knees if sleeping on your back or between your knees if sleeping on your side. this will help keep the spine more straight when sleeping and will help with some pains.

second - here's a site on the levoscoliosis - this should help explain some things about it.

http://www.levoscoliosis.org/

third - your bulging discs, I believe, would be more apt to cause neuropathy in your legs - here's site with info on this -

http://www.spineuniverse.com/conditions/sciatica/spinal-nerve-disorders

you might suggest having a MRI done (with and without contrast dye) as this may show more details of what is going on with your spine issues.

some of your other questions will need to be answered by your surgeon/physician - we are lay people who suffer from chronic pains of the spine - we do have professional physicians on board but they have such busy schedules they don't always have time to answer specific questions. and they would not be able to answer your questions over the internet as they would need to examine you to determine the full diagnosis.

hope this helps - please let us know how ur doing - Joy

Thanks Joy.. Interesting links! I appreciate that you are not able to answer all the questions... I'm just grasping at this point because, while not excruciating, the burning pain on my spine is constant. I was diagnosed with neuropathy years ago.. It is a symptom of Porphyria (an inherited blood disorder) but, is complicated by the bulging discs. I'm sure it is unrelated to scoliosis, but being that those problems already exist.. I want to do what I can to prevent the scoliosis from progressing.

It seems as though it has gotten worse pretty quickly... I hope this isn't indicative of future progression.

Thank you again.
