Hello Heidi,
I'm sorry to hear of your pain. Concerning your need for assistance with grocery shopping, etc., if there isn't a neigbor available for such there must be some type of social service agency who could be of help. Please try calling your local Lifetime Assistance & other such offices. There has to be someone out there available to help you.

Have you lost weight because you're not eating much or is it due to another issue?

Is your husband gainfully employed? If not, you may be eligible for some type of financial assistance.

Concerning your pain, I would recommend seeing a pain management specialist such as a physiatrist. They have helped many manage their pain. There is no reason why you should be suffering as you are. If you were able to better control your pain, tackling school along with work would be so much easier for you. I commend you for attempting to better yourself while feeling so lowsy.

Seeing as you've been denied LTD through your employer, you could always try for SSDI in hopes of it being temporary until you get your pain under control. Unfortunately, the application process for SSDI is time consuming.

I'm sure others will reply with additional suggestions. I hope we can all help guide you in finding solutions to your problems.

hi and welcome back -

just because one doc denied your ssdi benefits does not mean you cannot get them - it's time to look for other doctors.

see a good pain management - PHYSIATRIST - they have specific spine specialist that they work with and should be able to refer you to a good one.

also, regarding your accident from years ago - you may want to contact an attorney and see if you can get the case reopened or something on it -

also, because you are having so many issues with employers etc you should contact an attorney and see what they say about how you are being treated. some will give you advise over the phone if they see that you can do something on your own or if they can help they will let you know.

contact churches or red cross in your area and tell them what you need - they have lots of organizations in the community that will be able to help. there's lots out there you just need to start calling to get it all going.

ive been to every pain doc (physiatrist) in this area and even in lehigh and in philly...i cant afford to go any further than that...all of the pain docs i went to say they cant help me because of the fact that i can still move...they dont care about the pain...and because im mobile they said im not bad enough for ssdi and my lawyer said the same thing because i will get denied of my age..as i stated before every one i go to says they cant help me or want me to get s spinal cord stimulator...i have a tens unit which is the same thing only external...ive had a lamectomy at LSI but that didnt help and it was an in/out clinic...they did the surgery and i went home but had to stay in a hotel...i felt fine for a while but then i had pain in my left leg and ended up burning my ankle with an ice pack and all they did was laugh at me...and my drs here at home are complete morons that only want money and pill push...ive been thru the ringer with physiatrists, PT, AT, chiros, injections, surgery u name it i did it...now im out of options...i cant find a doctor who knows what i can do about my discs...they just tell me they are deccicating (drying up) and theres no way to put fluid back in them...i dunno where else to go...the red cross here only helps people in floods & fires and churches only help if u belong to one...i dont...
even though its a car accident case i dont think they can open it back up i already got my settlement from the ins company and the guy that hit me was never found because the police wouldnt do their job...i have no help at all...

hi again -

i'm not sure what to suggest as a means to get treatments etc.,

Is there a big university hospital near where you can go? they have state of the art treatments as they are a teaching hospital and they may be able to help.

other than that i'm not sure what can be done once disc(s) start drying out and from what I have read there is no way to reverse the degeneration process.

this article seems to explain it right down to detail:

http://www.mayfieldclinic.com/PE-DDD.htm

have you done any research on the internet for this? it may help you understand more what's going on to read up on all that it says about disc(s) drying up and what happens afterwards.

don't give up but arm yourself with as much info as you can find and then approach the doctors and ask questions.

we all have chronic pains where some of us don't have full diagnosis as far as what is causing it, what can be done etc., we deal with it the best way we can as we do rely on care from spine specialist to pain management specialist and I hope you will be able to find same for treatments etc.,

keep us posted what you find out etc., hopefully something will break here - take care Joy

Heidi -

I understand what you are going thru - we've all had episodes where we have gone from one spine specialist to another and form one pain management physician to another until we found the ones that would listen. and once we did, the proper testings were done (X-ray, MRI, CT Scan, Myelogram etc), proper diagnosis and finally proper treatment programs. Some of those programs may have involved surgery.

What you need to do is more searching of spine specialist (Orthopedic Spine Specialist or Neurosurgeon Spine Specialist) and good pain management (PHYSIATRIST is a good one) stay away from regular pain clinics as they are just looking for that $$ which usually includes injections and also cost for laying down for an hour so they are just making money when the injections may not work.

In your case, there could be treatment options and this is something that you need to do research and ask questions to the doctors that will listen.

as far as housework - hire a cleaning person - you can advertise for independent person and have them come out and give you a quote. I have a gal that I went to school with and she comes out once a month for $55 and dusts, clean bathrooms and vacuums for me. my house really doesn't get that dirty so it's really not necessary for her to come more often.

if you're tired of driving all over - call a cab -

start taking things into your control and make decisions for yourself.

bj1208 replied to HAdams27's response:
Hi - the Spinal Cord Stimulator may be an option to consider - they do a trial for 3-5 days to see if it will work then they implant the permanent one. It sends a false signal to the brain saying there is no pain.

this may help with your pains up to 40% so you may want to check into this again. before you leave they make sure the devise is set to the signal strength needed to help control the pains. these do not go off by themselves from all that i have studied on them. The batteries can stop working but all that is done is the battery is replaced.

This may help you get back some of your life back so please do think about this.

was told by another pain doc not to get it because im too mobile...i have a tens unit...and i wouldnt need something internally...my stupid neurologist is sending me back to another neurosurgeon whos only going to waste time and money for me...still leaving me on full time work which i cant do because i can barely get out of bed let along sit at a desk all day...but he doesnt care...hes saying my back didnt get worse but it did...this other quack is gonna say theres nothing he can do because its what they all say...

bj1208 replied to HAdams27's response:
I don't know what kind of doctor would say not to get a SCS Implant because the main reason to get one is to get ones quality of life back - to do more. So someone is not telling you correctly that you are too mobile for one.

have you tried to file for SSDI??? you may want to think about that - hire an attorney (one that only does disability claims) as they do not require money up front - they only get money if' your disability is approved and will take a fee for it.

I think also seeing a Orthopedic Spine Specialist may be in order - you're seeing one type of surgeon and think you should get another opinion from Ortho surgeon, even if it means going to a bigger city to see one. may be in your best interest to do this.

hope you can find a good doctor and get some pain relief. If you can't work then maybe filing for disability is the answer.
Take care~~

not trying to be rude but you keep repeating everything you said before and ive already tried everything and every kind of doc there is to see...i dont want the spinal cord stimulator being that i had surgery i dont want a device implanted inside me esp if it can go off while im driving...my lawyer said i will be denied for SSDI because im mobile and because im too young...none of my docs will back me up...ive had several mris within the past 7 yrs and my neuro thinks nothing has changed when its right there in black & white saying it did...ive been to 2 orthopedic specialists...1 did the laser surgery which made me worse and 1 said spinal cord stimulator...went to my 5th physiatrist and he said no spinal cord stimulator because i can move...where i live a good doc is scarce...i would have to leave the state which i cant...i cant afford it...i had my ltd checks taken away from me just because i can move around...im not allowed to live my life...according to them i have to be bedridden to get any money yet there are so many people out there who are frauds that get it and the people who are suffering dont see a dime...i have to bust my butt working in pain all day with a tens unit & a heating pad...my docs just look at me like a lost cause and my neuro said no one will touch me...which is true cuz every doc i go to now is like "i cant help"...my own husband would not even open his mouth at the drs office to defend me...thats how hard my life is right now...im struggling and its like no one cares...they just keep drugging me...and wanting to inject me...ive done everything in my power and done everything i can...but i cant find help...

take the route of speaking with an attorney for disability and present all your medical records - I bet the attorney will have some answers for you.

I don't know why you would be denied SSDI if you have a stimulator. I'm on SSDI - I had to after my back surgery, even tough the fusion surgery was a success they couldn't do anything for my pains or the nerve damage in both my legs.

especially since you had your ltd checks taken away speaking with an attorney may have made a difference.

if the doctors don't know what else to do for you then it's gonna be pretty much what you are doing now - taking oral meds and shots - discuss this with an attorney and see what they say.
Take care~~

my psycho neurologist makes me wastes time and money (hes the idiot that forced me back to work full time) and i went to this other looney neurosurgeon that says i have nothing surgically to have done...he wont recheck my neck or get an mri on that so i have to ask my pcp because all my other docs suck...they look at my mri for my back and say its nothing yet it says my discs are deccicating...the pain is so bad that i use my cane or scooter to get around and im to the point where i would rather die than have this pain...im too afraid to get a spinal cord stimulator because i have no one to bring me home after surgery and what if it goes off when im driving? i dont have anyone else to drive me anywhere...all the docs ive seen have mixed emotions...the neurosurgeons and the ortho said they want me to have it & the physiatrists say no...one kept shooting me with epidurals while the other said i shouldnt have one because im too mobile...i dont know what to do anymore besides wanting to end my life...none of the docs i have been to even care they just want money that i dont have and i have to be working to pay all these stupid med bills...my lawyer wont do anything...the paralegal said im too young and i will be denied...the only people around here that get SSDI are people who pay their docs money to lie for them...its insane...i would love to move out of the area i live in to find a doc out of state but i cant afford to do that either...
