tremendous pain after using an exercise ball

this is my first time to post. i am 49 and have chronic back and neck pain. stretching my lumbar area gives relief with a kind of relaxing pain. so i have a large exercise ball that i lay on stomach facing down. i let my legs hang. which in turn causes some decompression. so here is the problem when i start to get off, i immediately have immobilizing sharp pain. it lasts about 10-15 min. i'm not sure what is happening. i assume the compressed(?) disk or muscle in a relaxed state allows blood to flow in. to expand some. so when i begin to move or tighten up around the area, its pressure to the point of tremendous pain. what are your thoughts? thank you

The cardinal rule for any type of physical activity such as this is to stop if it hurts. My wife went through several months of physical therapy to help manage pain from a work related back injury. She has an exercise ball and her pt taught her proper exercises to help relieve her pain. She never did anything like you describe.

Have you had sessions with a physical therapist to show you what exercises on the ball you can try that might help and not hurt? Have you been diagnosed by a spine specialist such as a spinal orthopedic surgeon or spinal neurosurgeon? Have you seen a pain management specialist?

Spinal problems are extremely complex and doing any type of treatment without an accurate diagnose and instruction by the proper specialist can be dangerous and cause more damage and pain.

Within that Tip are links to websites that have good information regarding spinal problems and treatments. Do your research so you can fully understand your back conditions.

Is the pain continuing after you stop? You may want to discuss this with your doctor if it is.

I have a similar routine. I was just talking to my doc about the pain you describe. When I stretch and get my back muscles to relax it feels good, but when I sit up it hurts for awhile with sharp pain.

PS. I love my exercise ball as anything else gives sharp pressure points. It's just hard to do anything that doesn't end up hurting...but we need to exercise.
