daughter's upcoming surgery

My 16 yr. old daughter is having spinal fusion after learning of her 50 degree off-alignment curve due to scoliosis. She has not suffered hardly any pain, due to her dancing and overall good health and core strength. She is an avid dancer (for the past 12 years) and on 2 dance teams and decided to sit out this season to have the surgery in hopes that she can return to dancing for her last year of highschool before college. My question is, are there any dancers out there who have had the surgery and what were their outcomes and ability to return to it afterwards? We have been assured by her doctor she can resume dance after healing, no earlier than 6 months after surgery.
I am also concerned with pain and after-care. Her pre-op visit is coming up, but wanted any information from people who have been through this or know someone who has...

Hi Dancermom - welcome to the support group -

Unfortunately, I don't recall any members that were dancers that have had a fusion surgery. And please note, this support group is for those that suffer with chronic spine pains.

I would take your daughter and have a couple more opinions done - both with Orthopedic Spine Specialist and Neurosurgeon Spine Specialist - this way you will know for sure what you are up against.

Surgery should always be the last resort after all other treatment plans have been tried.

Fusion surgeries are about 40-60% successful - meaning the disc(s) have been removed and the hardware has been put in place and is intact and the fusion has taken. Fusions are done to stabilize te spine. There is no guarantee fusions will take. There is no guarantee also relating to pains as far as reducing them or having no pains at all.

I had a single fusion done in 2/08 - as far as the surgery it was successful however my pains are worse now than before the surgery.

Your daughter is young and I would get a couple more opinions and please do research on the internet relating to fusion surgery - and success rates and also failed fusion surgeries.

please keep us posted what you find out~~
