I have had 5 back surgeries. My 4th one I had was a fusion on L4, L5, S1,& S2 with rods and screws back in 2001. In 2010 I had the rods and screws removed because they had moved a little and were causing me problems. Now I have been noticing that anytime I shift myself in a chair or move myself in a different position u can hear my back cracking or hear and feel it shifting in the area that is fused. Is this normal? Can a fusion crack or break apart? Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

Hi Tami46 - welcome to the support group -

Yes there can be lots of different reasons this is happening - I have a fusion at L5 with plate, 4 screws and a cage. my L4 has been doing something the last couple of years where it feels like it's crunching over my L5 disc - I finally talked my PA into having an x-ray done - where they do extension and flexation x-ray (bend forward all way and then bend backwards) it hurts but they will get an idea if this is happening to you. I just recently had a current MRI done (last one was 11/2011) and it has gotten so bad. I'm lining up getting appts set up with both Neurosurgeon Spine Specialist and Orthopedic Spine Specialist - this way I will know what all my options are.

If it's been more than a year since you've had an MRI done I would suggest that you discuss with your doc and have one done. this should let you know what is going on -

please keep us posted what you find out~~

Thank you for the kind welcome and for the information. I will talk to my doctor and see about getting an X-ray or MRI done. I haven't had either done on my back for at least 2 years.

Thank you again. I will keep you posted!
