Has anyone had a 3 level fusion, L3-L4, L4-L5, L5-S1? How did it go?

Had a 9 and then a 5 so I do go for odd numbers.

I know people that have had good success with surgery similar to what you're describing. I wouldn't say it's a walk in the park, but its gonna hurt.

Hi Hawg1960,

I had L3-S1 fused in 2007 I was 45 at the time, pretty active but not real fit. Yikes, that was a long time ago! I have done pretty well with it. I started in early 2007 with L2-L4 massively ruptured and a 2 level discectomy. In August of 2007 I had ruptured 3 disks and my surgeon and I determined my best bet was a fusion. I healed very quickly and was back to work at a desk job in about 6 weeks part time and full time in 8. I over did everything, exercise, work, travel, you name it. Within about 3 months I was in pain again and it took me a year to really feel good.

At this point I have nerve damage in both feet and my right leg. I do not climb well and I do not do well getting down to the floor but otherwise do pretty much what I want. I walk, ride my bicycle, swim and have even gone to the local waterpark to be a little insane for a day. I do pay for over-doing it but generally lead a pretty normal life.

My best suggestion to you is if you are considering a fusion, write out your questions and ask them, one by one. If your surgeon scoffs, walk away. If you choose surgery, you can never go back regardless of the outcome. Do not make a decision until you are sure it is the best choice for you.

I enjoy the best of both worlds, my pain is low and my back is stable. Not everyone enjoys the pain relief I do. Seek out the best in your area, a spine specialist either neurosurgeon or orthopedist.

my best to you
