Hey Everyone - Just an Update~~

Hi Everyone~~

Hope everyone is enjoying the fall like weather in some places. I've had my AC off for couple of weeks. However I refuse to turn my heat on even in the early mornings. I do have a gas-log fireplace and have had my hubby turn that on a couple of times. Boy that sure is nice~~

Just wanted to give everyone an update on my upcoming surgery. My surgeon wants to meet with me and hubby to discuss everything. We all know how busy Neurosurgeons can be and my appt (the first available) is Thursday Nov 7th at 4:15pm.

I waited til today to call as I really don't want to go thru the holidays having surgery and having the consultation Nov 7th would mean surgery will more than likely be after the first of the year. I hate to wait this long foreseeing getting worse but think it will be best.

My pains are getting worse - every day it's harder to stand up as I have more pains in my feet/knees and just legs in general. My lower back is also getting worse. I'm getting less and less sleeping hours as I can only sleep on my left side and can only handle 3-4 hours then I have to get up and sit in the recliner. Sleeping in recliner has become harder to do as it causes more pains and stiffness making it harder to get up. So looks like i'll be SOL for a while - gosh not gonna matter - been sleeping like this since after my last surgery in 2008~~~

I will keep you all posted on what goes on~~Wishing the fairy to come and sprinkle the pain reducing fairy dust on us all~~

Hi, Joy.

Thanks for the update. We will be praying.

My wonderful wife will be being re-evaluated by a neurosurgeon soon. She is having trouble walking, sitting, standing and has a lot of pain and tingling going down her left leg. Her pm and chiro think a bulging disc has now herniated. The pm will be doing pain shots and another rhizotomy soon, but she also wants to see now if surgery will help.

Yes, please send that pain relieving dust sprinkling fairy to everyone.

Have a blessed and thankful Thursday, friends.

Hi Joy that does seem like a distance away can they put you on their cancellation list? That way if someone cancels you could get in sooner. I will be praying. Deb

Hi Deb -

I thought about having us put on a cancellation list, however if the appointment falls during the work hours my hubby would have to take off work - and his Union (all Unions) that he works for is basically a T&M type of jobs - meaning Time and Material - so if he doesn't work he doesn't get paid (same if he is sick or there is a Holiday) they can't factor that in contracts- he does have a lot of benefits being in the Union and gets paid very well. It just hits us when we budget his paycheck each week plus my SSDI - so we are strapped on money. And only having one car makes it harder - hubby gets off work at 3pm and having the appointment at 4:15 works out real good.

When you think about it it's really only a month and one week away which is usually how long it takes to get in to see a spine specialist.

If the pains get unbearable I will get in sooner but still would want to have recovery from surgery after the Holidays - this will be my 2nd Fusion (had L5-S1 done 2/08 went in thru stomach) and with this one they will go in thru the back placing a plate screws, cage and 2 rods. So this surgery is going to be more complicated than my first one.

Oh plus I will need to reduce the amount of pain meds I am taking. My Pain Specialist discussed this with me last week and I agree - go into surgery on least amount of pain meds that way coming out of surgery we can see if pains have increased or decreased some and go from there controlling the pains. Right now I am on 60mg morphine 4XDaily and 30mg oxycodone 4XDaily - I need to decrease the Oxycodone (these can be cut in half) by 1/2 tablets every 4 days until I am down to 2 tablets daily and the morphine would need to be decreased one tablet every 7 days til I am taking 2 tablets daily. I also take 3600mg Gabapentin (generic for Neurontin) but I am to stay on that dose as it's for my nerve damage in both legs.

I also need to quit SMOKING (ok lets have it!!!) I know it's bad but have been smoking since I was 13 (52 now) so that's gonna be hard. I do have an electronic cig and will be using that to help.

So there's a lot I need to do to prepare for surgery and getting that done before the new year will be my resolution!!!

Ok so I'm babbling right now!! LOL My pain meds are taking affect.

Thanks for your post Deb~~

Hi Dave~~

I can't remember which disc your wife is having problems with but if it's in the lower back I hope and pray they don't want to do a fusion. Seriously, In my research I have found more people having problems when fusions are in the lumbar area, especially the L4 and L5 discs.

It seems the mid and upper backs when having fusion tend to have little or no problems. What I have found is that there is so much stress on the lumbar discs that once a disc is operated on (fusions) that a domino affect happens and more pains develop.

I hope and pray your wife can get relief with the treatments. Keep us posted.

How are you doing? I tried to get the fairy to come but she is being stubborn!! LOL

Joy,

My wife's work injury caused L4 to go back further than L5 and the disc in between is now bulging. That is the disc that the doctors think has now herniated. She has other bulging discs in all levels of her spine. Surgery will only happen if that is the last resort and after lots more research.

I am doing OK. I'm taking glucosamine supplements and a vitamin D3 supplement which seems to be helping the stiffness a bit. Pain levels remain the same. It is cooler and dryer now in WNY which also helps.

Have a blessed and fantastic Friday, friends.

Hi Dave -

If your wife truly needs to have surgery and it entails having a fusion done please please do a lot of research on that.

I hope and pray she doesn't need it and hope and pray your pain levels are down.

We had a cool front move thru today with lots of rain this morning and we are supposed to get down to 49 for the next few nights. This weather is really playing with my back and leg pains.

best wishes for you both~~
