I wrote before on here about my ignorant doctor not wanting to refer me for surgery. But last week when I made an appointment to my dr for my back someone accidentally set me up with an appointment with someone else in the office (I didn't know there was anyone else wohoo!). Anyways, she was a nurse practitioner and actually listened to me. My blood pressure has been up there which is why I also made the appointment. I think it's from stress and a poor diet. My husband and I were moving so no cooking utensils =(

Anyways, I finally got an mri but i was too chicken to ask her about surgery lol. So I told myself that since I have an appointment to see her again in a month anyways, I'd try one last go the old fashioned way before asking for surgery. Well, it's been a week and I am thinking maybe I just should have asked for the surgery. I mean in 26 years there hasn't been a diet that has worked for me and already I am frustrated on this one.

So my question is how do I ask my doctor? I don't know which surgery is best. All surgeries scare me but if it's what works, what else can I do?

IMHO... I would get out of the mindset of asking and start telling them. It is your health, not thiers.

I would broach the subject at the next appointment along the lines of... "Doc, I'm exploring my options for Bariatric surgery which after researching is in my opinion the best option for me. I want to review my options so I can make the best healthcare choices for myself"

Then listen to her opinion (cause that's what it is); get online and research your options, ie: lapband, gastric bypass, gastric sleeve etc and decide which path is best for you, then contact your insurance company to see what the qualifications are for the chosen procedure and then work to meet the criteria.

I think too many people feel intimidated by doctor's because of some authority complex, but having worked in the medical profession it is rare that a doctor will buck a patients wish if they are truly serious about it.

Good Luck!
You can do this!

Wow thanks! I think that's exactly what I needed to hear. Last time I asked my doc about it she said no for a few reasons and said about how some patient of hers at that time couldn't even walk due to complications or something. But at that time I had done months of research so I knew that that doesn't happen to everyone. And I know to look for a surgeon who has done it 100s of times to avoid more of a risk of having complications.

I'm trying to lose weight on my own right now and i hate it because I am hungry all the time. But I am losing weight right now but at the chance of starving myself. Who can stick to that long term lol. Maybe it will count towards the weight you have to lose before surgery who knows hehe.

Thanks for your input. 3 weeks til my appointment. We'll see what happens. I'm looking forward to it now
