Some ten plus years post my gastric bypass <which was successful and I have always been pleased with> I now face bone loss/calcium deficiency and extreme anemia<Iron defic> and since I do not absorb things normally due to this surgery, I wonder if anyone is aware of some successful options to these needed replacements in my system since my insurance company is refusing to pay for the needed Iron & Calcium Infusions (IV) which would cost me over $6,000 and I can't afford. Surely someone else is facing this dilema too I hope?

You can try searching for sublingual calcium. I haven't had surgery (I'm considering it), but I don't absorb vitamin B12 normally. It's apparently a genetic thing. My doctor originally recommended injections, but it was a hassle going in so often. I asked for something else that would work, and she recommended sublingual B12.

Sublinguals go under your tongue, and instead of being absorbed through your intestines, they go directly into your bloodstream, from what I can tell.

Have you talked to your doctor?

I've been treating mine with massive amounts of calcium and iron. I also had my thyroid removed so I can't absorb calcium either and I'm also chronically anemic at 9 years post op RNY. I take 1000 mg calcium 4 times a day and 2 OTC Iron (FE) tablets 4 times a day. The constipation is horrid and I fight with it all the time but my levels are on the low side of normal.

I hope you have found something that works.

Good luck
