MD question: Vitamin D and depression question part 2

An_243880 posted:
I've been on the prescription Vitamin D for several weeks now (50,000 units weekly). I have no idea how long, if my low Vitamin D level is even the cause of my depression right now, it will take for the level to rise sufficiently as to impact my mood. My PCP is pretty sure this is a Vitamin D deficiency induce depression. My psychiatrist isn't quite as convinced now. I'm just stuck in a long and incredibly depressed mood which is not typical for my bipolar cycles. I am way more manic and for longer periods of time than I am depressed, typically. Is there any accepted timeframe in which the Vitamin D can be expected to take effect, if its going to?

Joseph F Goldberg, MD responded:
Dear An,

I am inclined to agree with your psychiatrist more than your internist on this issue. It is altogether good to correct low vitamin D levels but I would pharmacologically treat mania or depression as mania or depression, irrespective of your vitamin D level.

Thank you for responding. I appreciate the input. I'm not accustomed to depressions that are this long in duration or intense. I wish there were a fix for it. Mania I know what to do with.
