Medication side effects?

I have been severely depressed the last 3 weeks, and I wonder if this could be a side effect of my medications. I take Seroquel, Abilify, Intuniv, and Lamictal. Can these medications cause you to become more depressed instead of feeling better? Anybody have any thoughts/suggestions?

Joseph F Goldberg, MD responded:
Dear brsInangeI91,

Some of the medicines you mention might help depression, but none are known to cause it. Chances are these medicines are simply failing to thus far treat a depression that is independently present. The antidepressant dose of Seroquel is 300 mg/day; Lamictal is more of a preventative drug than an acute drug for bipolar depression and has no known "acute" dose for depression; abilify was shown to be the same as a placebo in treating bipolar depression, and Intuniv is for ADD and likely is neutral re. depression.
