Issues with Oxcarbazepine for my bipolar
avatar
ForestBorn posted:
I've recently come across a few issues, one being a loss of sight/ fuzzyness-black vision when I'm out and about after taking it. I have had some hard core dizzy moments. My first feeling of it was when I was out with friends after about 20 minutes of taking it I had this feeling I could barely stand, I was disoriented and could not walk without going into almost a drunk/drugged zig zag fashion.

Now when taking this with my 800mg of Naproxen it's even more amplified which as caused me to gather that mixing those two meds together is not the best idea... but still the fact that I am having the issues I am is causing me to worry without the Naproxen... is this something that is bad enoug that I should go see a doctor?

Joseph F Goldberg, MD responded:
Dear ForestBorn,

There is no drug interaction between oxcarbazepine and Naproxen. Oxcarbazepine can cause dizziness. If the problems you are noticing began only after starting the oxcarbazepine, it may be worthwhile to contact your doctor to discuss (and either lower the dose or change to something else...there are better, more evidence-based medicines out there than oxcarbazepine for treating bipolar disorder).

thank you... it suprisingly did not happen after just starting it... I've been on this drug for almost 2 years now and it's just now having this effect that what is what had me so worried...

Joseph F Goldberg, MD replied to ForestBorn's response:
Dear ForestBorn,

It would be unusual for a dizziness to emerge as a new side effect after 2 years. Your doctor might want to measure an oxcarbazepine blood level to see if it's particularly high. It's also possible the dizziness has nothing to do with any of the medicines, in which case it would be appropriate for your general medical doctor to evaluate the symptoms to determine their cause.
