Sleep walking or wakeful memory loss???
avatar
jselleck posted:
After I go to sleep my husband claims when I'm manic that I have a tendency to do weird stuff like try to take my meds when it's not time to, feed our cats, and wander the apartment watching tv with him. My psychiatrist says that it's wakeful memory loss, that my brain is firing so fast that it's not recording what I'm doing. Kinda freaky huh?? Although one time when I fell and knocked over a shelf on the bookcase I woke up enough to remember that incident. My question is has anyone experienced anything like this, and do they know which condition it might be, sleep walking or wakeful memory loss?? Would appreciate any input. Thanks in advance my friends. Have a great night.

I did something weird happen last night.. I was sleep walking in my apt. and went and woke up my roommate cuz he had a "phone call" that he had to take... When he opened the door to his bedroom I half woke up and he told me what I did and I was so embarrased that I had woke him up at like 6 am ... But he recognized that I must have been sleep walking cuz he said I looked completely out of it when he first saw me.. I don't know if that is something similar or not but I'm going to talk to my pdoc about it when I see him 8/7...

I am with my wife J on this one. I am a little concerned also. I work nights and am not always at home to monitor her sleeping behavior it is not just sleep walking she sleep talks and will pet our faithful cat jack who loves to sleep at her side also some times to. The sleeping behavior seems to only happen when she is manic and seems to be mixed with with days on end of when she gets little to no sleep. I my self have wondered if her mind is running so hard and so fast that it does not completely shut off when she does finally sleep. Like my wife said any help full thoughts and or suggestion would be appreciated. Does any thing like this happen to the rest of you during bad manic episodes and how do you cope.

DR G if you are reading this is there any thing that can be done about this?

Thank you in advance for comments and advice.

Mozzergburl thanks for the post. That's almost exactly what is going on with me. I'm "out" of it, while these things are going on and have no idea what's happening. Please let me know what your doc says after you see him or her. Hope you're doing okay. Take care of your self.

I'll definitely keep you posted... I talk in my sleep all the time and I walk half asleep all the time, but I thought that that's because I smoke. I've never talked to my roommate or woken him up... But it does concern me cuz I'm really out of it.. I don't realize I'm doing it at the moment, but I do remember doing it when I wake up in the am... so weird.

Matt,

I've noticed it happens to me during mixed episodes and manias..... I'm just getting out of a depression, but fear I'm heading into a mixed episode... So my pdoc is keeping a close eye on me

I posted about the sleep walking/talking and Dr. Goldberg responded if you want to look at it... but he said there's no real treatment, other than looking to see if it's a medication side effect or alcohol/alcohol withdrawal... Other than that all you can do is make sure your surroundings are safe for the sleep walker

Thanks mozzergurl we saw DRGs post.It is a little disapointing but what can you do but live with it. Besides if we some how figured out a way to stop the night time acctivity I think our two cats would be very disapointed considering that she likes to pet our oldest one Jack in her sleep while mumbling kind things to him and she has been known to give them both treats in her sleep as well. So as long as the cats are getting spoiled it is not all bad. Thanks again for thinking of my wife and I.

P.S. I use a picture of Jack as my profile picture.

Dear mozzergurl,

Ditto what my husband said. Thanks for the help and input. Hope you're feeling better soon. Like you I have pain issues, a really bad knee and back. And like you my doctors are jittery about prescribing pain medication because of my psych meds. Hope you finally find some relife. If you can stand to use or them or they would help I find that the therma care heat wraps help a lot when I'm in my wost pain. Just an idea. Take care my friend and thank again.

I do use the thermacare heat pads they do help alot.. I also have regular heating pads made of rice that work really well but they just relieve mild pain... they don't help when my pain is severe.. thank you for keeping me in mind as well have a great weekend and safe sleepwalking! lol
