Dear Dr. G - Audio Disorder Processing
mercygive posted:
Dear Dr. G,
Is Audio Disorder Processing a cognitive disorder? What types of symptoms would someone have if they had ADP? For example, my boss asked me for a stamp pad and I gave him a stapler, he repeated himself and I still gave the stapler. This is becoming a frequent and worsening occurrence for me. I don't think I am correctly processing what people are saying to me. And it doesn't just happen at work.
Thank you
Joseph F Goldberg, MD responded:
Dear mercygive,

So-called "auditory perceptual processing disorder" is a somewhat controversial (ill-defined) phenomenon. It involves no identified deficits in any brain structures or auditory pathways, making it is hard to know the cause, and how best to classify (and treat) it. Generally, though it is considered to be a type of speech-language disorder, rather than either a psychiatric condition or a (technically) cognitive disorder.
