WOW--It was a beautiful day yesterday and going to be today. So Weird how much happier a person feels when it is so gorgeous out.

O.K. the guys fenced in my Garden Oasis to keep the deer and rabbits and other critters out. It is about 40 ft by 50 ft. My side yard. When we had that awful ice storm our huge apple tree fell and wiped out part of the fence.

I have 4---4 ft by 4 ft blocks for my square foot gardening. Boards are all put together. Now I decided to paint them. The guys (my DH and his friend) think I am nuts to paint the boards but I want them to look good. So will do that today.

I couldn't figure out why Block #2 which I had planted 2 weeks ago wasn't sprouting. Figured it was too cold and too much rain. Then I was sitting at my computer looking out my bay window and WHAT do I see???? My crazy cat using it for a litter box. UGH. I had forgot to put the floating row cover over it the night before. Geez, we fence it all for the dumb deer and rabbits but forgot about the CAT!!!! Go Figure!!!

Now my radishes are coming up all over my block instead of in small neat rows. Oh Well. I do love that cat, tho---so will now put a small fence around my blocks and make sure they are covered at night.

O.K. the sun is just now peeking out from above the trees so time to get busy outside.

If I keep myself busy it helps to not think about the US scheduled for tomorrow for my Mom. I couldn't sleep last night. UGH.

Because my DH is working again-- (get up at 4:30 AM) we went to bed last night before the ball game was over. Pretty boring anyway as they could not get a hit or a run for 8 innings. But I had my Walkman in my ear and listened to the rest of it in bed. Mercy, I about jumped out of bed when they scored 3 runs in the bottom of the ninth to WIN. Love to watch these young kids learn how to play and WIN. Plus they are all so good-looking and have very cute butts. Sorry!!! Us old ladies do appreciate good looking dudes. LOL. Most of them on the team this year could be my Grand-sons for Heaven's sake as they are all so young and up and coming.

Sorry Michelle, Red Sox lose again. I couldn't resist that little dig. LOL.

Hope all are having sunny skiies. Take care.

Well, between your garden, the sunshine and butts, you sound pretty chipper, my Friend!

One thing about fencing out the cat...How high do you intend to build the fence to keep him from his "al fresco litter box"?? Cats climb and jump and are inordinately stubborn...even more stubborn than DHs! Good luck on that one!! Keep usposted as I fell there might be further updates coming!

Look for Pinkie tomorrow for you and Mom.

blessings,
Rachael

LOL Rachael. You would have to add the "butts" to your post.

As for my cat I have a movable fence around the blocks made from PVC pipe and wire fencing. It is only 2 ft high but I can cover it up with my floating row cover and hook it to my little fence. If he can't jump in there he can't get there. I had made these sections of fence for Mr. Lucky years before. He could have jumped over it but respected the fence as we would go out and play ball. Then when we got Mini---the guys put up a 5 ft fence around the front and side of the house. So now, I have all these little sections and am recycling them. I had put them up already in case Mini decided to lung thru the gate. She would have destroyed my plants. Only thing was I had forgot to hook up the cover the night before.

I know you thought I was going to put up a fence the size of the "space elevator"!!!! LOL

Thanks for the laugh today.

Hi Ladies,

Geez, I should have posted my story of the slugs on this post instead of the post about my Mom. It made for a crazy head-line until one of you answered.

I worked out in my "Oasis" all day yesterday. What fun I had. When Haylen asked about pics I decided to take a bunch of pics of the mess I have out there right now. Figured I would take some "Before" and "After" pics. Now all I have to do is figure how to get them on the boards. LOL.

I even planted some flowers believe it or not. It was suppose to rain last night but got cool instead. Down to about 39. Figures as I finally planted my little plants I have been hardening off for 2 weeks. The ones I had started in the house. Weird weather. Sun is out again today.

Wow--can't believe it but I see no slugs out there. Maybe---Maybe I have finally an answer to my worst problem. Last year I used non-sudsing ammonia mixed in a spray bottle with 1/2 water. Squirted that on them and they swivieled up like when you put salt on them. But the ammonia turns into nitogren when it hits the ground and does not hurt the soil.

Several years ago I asked one of the "Organic Gardeners" from our Organic farmers's market what they used for slugs. When she was explaining they "just planted more plants"!!! I almost laughed in her face. (WHAT---do they put up a sign in their garden and say all slugs eat here!!!!---But leave the rest of it alone?) Then I told her about my ammonia and water spray. She reported in no uncertain terms that using ammonia was making a "BOMB". Honestly she was serious!!! That is when I made a bee-line for my car. I sat there for almost 20 minutes laughing so hard the tears were coming down my face.

Honestly the arrogance of "Organic Gardeners"!!!!

I could not believe how serious she took herself.

Cause we have well-water I have never used any pesticides or Weed and Feed junk in our yards. I want to protect our water. Not that I am an Organic gardener but just want to be as safe as I can. But each Spring I think back of what that lady said and get the giggles all over again.

Happy Gardening All.

HI Jan,

I will have to say that I struggle with anything Organic - especially when they say everything is grown organically, a have attended a few classes and they mention what they use for fertilizers and some have mention using cow manure, well most cows are feed this and that to beef them up, given shots etc, so what happens to all of the chemicals that they ingest - - - anyway I like you try not to use a lot of pesticides etc or a lot of fertilizers, I will say that I will try the ammonia & water for the slugs and snails, I normally take a small bucket or container full of salt out with me when gardening and figure they deserve to sizzle and forth for eating all of my plants.

Have a great time gardening, I have lots to plant - that's what happens when one has and addiction to buying plants.

Take care, thanks for the laugh also....

Love to all Mary

Jan - the Red Sox are losing to the lowly Royals...geez, I thought I left the losing baseball team behind when we left Kansas City!!! Not good at all! I did go to a game with my son last week and the Sox managed to win that one, so we had a good time.

How is your mom doing?

Hugs, Michelle

Michelle,
Our Red Sox have to pick up the pace!!!! Especially with this being the 100th anniversary of Fenway. I am a fan of Yaz, Tony C, and the Hawk - never been the same since. I know, I am seriously dating myself. Plus bleacher seats used to be a buck!!! Now a hotdog is like $5 - ridiculous!

Well, got to keep routing for them.

Jan, I am asking too, what is the latest on mom?

Hope all went well with the gardening and this is a slug free season for us all!

The KC Royals beat the Red Sox...yikes! I sure hope they figure things out, I hate the thought of another summer without competitive baseball. I've experienced 17 years of that disappointment!!!

Every time I see you discussing the KC Royals, I have to smile a bit. Many years ago I went to a charity dinner where they had a blind aution I'd never been to one and wanted to do the auction thing right. I bid on an autographed book because I feared the author might be there and no one had bid and the author might feel bad. (I "won" the bid!! Didn't want to book, but it was mine! )

There also was a baseball signed by George Brett of the KC Royals. Now, I am not a big sports fan, but knew that if folks bid on these items, it sometimes encouraged others to bid and the price went up. There was this ball in a little glass case, and only a few had bid thus far so I added my bid. Again, I won! Ever since I have had this silly ball sitting on an end table, remininding me that, just like at the casino, I am not a good "player"!!

'Sides I once went to a game at the KC Royals stadium. All in all, a "sorry" experience! I'll stick with my Tigers and Lansing Lugnuts!!

Blessings and baseball!

Oh Michelle, i am so sorry you can't catch a break with your teams.

Wonder how much of the Red Sox problems is their new manager Valentine? Seems as tho he didn't get off to a very good start with his new team. LOL.

I can't believe Beckett got BOOOOED of his own field yesterday. How Weird is that one!!! Sounds like the whole team is in terrible straits.

Maybe when you get back from Paris they will have put it all together. Let's hope so anyway.

Sunny skies All.

I can at least say that I have attended a Red Sox's game at Fenwick Park, glad I went when they won, was informed they had the best hot dogs in the world there, wrong, Had to of been the worst. It was freezing cold, but they won, it was back in April 2007.
Sorry to hear that the announcer died this last week, cannot remember his name.

Love to all

Hi Mary, I am with you when it comes ot "Organic People"!! Geez, I wouldn't use cow manure now days either considering all the junk they get fed. Good for you to pick up on that one. I have a big composter on a frame. So far I have yet to get "Black Gold" but I do get a lot of drainage under it which I save in a tub. Good compost Tea. I dilute it with water and feed that to my little plants all summer Works for me.

When I put the soil back into my blocks I use 4 different types of compost--peat moss- and perlite. The perlite keeps the soil from packing down too much. So far so good on this mix I do.

I must admit I do use some Mirco-grow fertilzer but that is it.

Mary, do try the Sluggo. I have not had one damaged plant so far. No dead ones in my garden spaces either. It is O.K. to use around pet, kids, and isn't suppose to hurt the soil. I am totally amazed.

Happy Gardening.

Hello Ladies,

How are you all, all rested and relaxed and you have all of your gardens planted, well at least the flowers. I can say that I am about done, had a rest last week while my sister visited, then I was back at it yesterday. I got the last two planted and one that was planted took everything out of it and put shade plants in, Lowes had some shade perennials for a pretty good price, will need to visit them again. As I grew my own lobelia, I still need to put what that in hanging baskets with Ivy and then smaller containers and put them in my garden. I will have to say that I ventured out this morning and glad that I had put down snail and slug bait, those little buggers thought they were going to get a good snack, fixed them, so will be back out tonight with a little bit more to deter them from their goal. I just make a big circle with it and they do not it...

Anyway doing good, glad that all is well with you all, enjoy whatever it is that makes you happy.

Love to all

Hi Mary, Glad to read you had a small break from the garden for a few days. I have been out there for over a week trying my best to get things done before it rains again. Almost made it but it rained last night and all day. Oh Well, everything was getting pretty dry altho I was watering it.

Have you tried the slug bait??? I am totally amazed how well it works. No dead slugs but my plants all look really good. Plus it lasts thru several rains and/or waterings so you don't have to use much of it.

My brocilli not doing too good as it got pretty warm all last week. It will love this cooler weather.

Seems like the only thing that is growing well is the stupid grass. I didn't get my side yard mowed before the rain.

Hey, I even bought some flowers to plant also. Several years ago I bought this awesome wrought-iron plant stand. It holds 6 large pots, so I just had to get that going.

Happy Gardening.
