Early Menopause

Hi, I was just recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer. It's invasive ductal carcinoma. I had a 0.9 cm mass in my left breast that was positive. It's estrogen and progesterone sensitive. I don't have a stage yet. The Doctors said I'll find that out after my mastectomy when biopsy my lymphnodes. I'm 28 yrs old. My question is if any of you lates were forced into menopause by chemotherapy and hormone therapy? The doctor says I'll be on tamoxifen for 5 years and I'll have to have chemo. They aren't sure how agressive they'll have to be with the chemo yet. Thanks.

I am so sorry that you are having to deal with all of this at such a young age.
As a general rule you should not get pregnant for the 5 years you are taking tamoxifen. After you go off the Tamoxifen you should get your periods back. Your early menopause is temporary. And women can get pregnant after taking Tamoxifen.
If you are concerned about having children after your chemo and Tamoxifen, the best place to have all our quesions answered is a fertility clinic. You shold consult with a fertility specialist. Make a list of all your questions and concerns. While oncologists know something about fertility and chemo, that is not really their speciality which is why I sugges tthat you speak directly to a fertility expert once you know the type of chemo you will be given.
Sometimes women choose to have their eggs frozen before that have chemo. I do not know the cost of having this done or whether insurance will pay for it since you have a diagnosis of breast cancer. Once again I would speak to a doctor who specializes in fertility to guide you in making the best decisions for someone your age.
Much good luck to you and let us know what you find out.

(((Hugs))) to you. Judy has given you some great advice. Definitely consult with a fertility specialist. I am aware of women whose periods returned after chemo, and some who have conceived. So talk to the experts about your particular situation.

Good luck, and keep in touch!

Hi Judyfams and mhall6252,

I talked to my oncologist and he said I'd have about a 50/50 chance of getting my fertility back, The fertility specialist agreed with him too. I am currently going through an IVF cycle to collect and freeze some eggs. They fertility Clinic I went to is really nice. I would also tell anyone that wants to freeze eggs to go to fertilehope.com too. It has info and has a program to help people pay for IVF. That's one stress gone.

Update on my cancer- MRI showed a mass in the right side. It made me feel better about getting a bilateral Masectomy. My surgery is August 3rd. So cross your fingers that there is little or no lymph node involvment.

TeranO,
Thanks for getting back to us. I am glad that you are working with a fertility clinic to harvest and freeze your eggs. As difficult as this already is - your new post sounds like you are feeling much better about this whole unfortunate situation.
I will be praying for you on August 3 - and please keep us informed of how you are doing.
There will be ups and downs for you along the way - but always remember we are all here for you!
Much love, cyber hugs and positive thoughts coming your way,
Judy

Thanks Judy and Michelle,
I appreciate everything. My surgery went well. they took 3 lymph nodes out of the left side and they all appear clean. They are still sending them for biopsy. I'm crossing my fingers.

I ended up with 11 frozen embryoes from the IVF cycle. I must say everything is going very well and I can't help but smile about it. Teran

Hi Guys,

I'm very excited to let you know my lymph nodes came back negative, as did the unknown mass on the right side and I am offically Stage 1 . My Oncologist is running a MammaPrint test so we can decide what, if any, chemo I might need. He is thinking I won't have to do any Chemotherapy because I had the bilateral Mastectomy and all my margins were clear. I will still have to do hormone therapy. I'm really hoping I won't have to do chemo. Thank you guys for listening to me, Teran

That is great news!! Yea!! Keep us posted. I hope you
don't have to have chemo. It's not fun , but its not as
scary as you think it would be. I have been on hormone
therapy for 1 1/2. I am on tamoxifen. I have not had any
major problems with it. I was not in menopause I was 45
at dx. My onc did bloodwork and I am still not through
menopause. On the tamoxifen I get some hot flashes, thats
about it . They aren't all day everyday. They have meds for
that too.
