Just wondering

Hi, just wondered if anyone is familiar with a test called the "proliferation index". I just found this report on the back of my latest lab results. I've looked it up but it seems quite confusing.

Hope all are well, I think of each of you every day and wish you all that's;good.

Janie - I believe the proliferation index would be the same as the ki-67, which is essentially the speed at which the cancer cells are multiplying. Mine was 90% - blazingly fast.

Here is a link that explain it in clinical terms:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1770351/

The bottom line - a lower number is better.

One of the reasons I am happy about the clinical trial that I am about to do is that they are looking to slow down the proliferation, the ki-67 or the mitotic rate. All those terms mean about the same thing.

Hugs,
Michelle

Hi Michelle,
Hope all is going smoothly with you, and your trip plans are on track. I wanted to thank you for the links concerning the k1-67. I found my test results on the back of a four page pathology report which my surgeon handed me at the end of my last appointment. I read and re-read it and kept thinking it didn't sound good. My score was 93, so about the same as yours. This has kind of taken the wind out of my sails, really like nothing else in this whole journey. I attended a support group here at home last night, with an oncology nurse and a counselor leading the discussions. I asked a question about this ki-67 and they just stared at me for a moment. Absolute silence. I don't know if they were horrified at my score and didn't want to scare me or if they weren't familiar with the test but fortunately someone else asked a question and I dropped it. It was interesting, there were women there who in a situation so much worse than mine, and some in a better place, so I guess I'm right in the middle. It helped me close down my pity party.

Best of everything to you, Michelle

Thanks, Janie. I think one thing we learn quickly is that no matter how dire we assess our own situation, there are those who are in a worse place. Kinda sucks, but it's the truth.

I hope you're doing OK. Give yourself permission to grieve, be angry and let your emotions out from time to time. An occasional whine followed by a glass of wine is perfectly normal!
