Visit to surgeon

Mabel57 posted:
My visit to my surgeon is coming up next week and I am feeling very positive about the outcome but I am going to ask him why he said earlier that I should have regular scans done but the oncologist said that more scans will only put more radiation into my body which can cause cancers to start and it's a juggle to say if this is worse than doing regular scans to pick up any new outbreak early.
Does anyone else have this dilemna?
I am still feeling pretty good and don't dwell on what COULD happen but am a bit curious about this.
I look forward to any opinions on this but I know that I will be asking my surgeon (who is an absolute gem!) for his thoughts on how this should pan out.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and I shall let you know how I go.

I'm glad to hear you are feeling good!

You are right to talk this over with all of your docs and arrive at a decision that's as informed as possible at present. To answer your question, we ALL have this dilema--how much screening is enough and how much is too much? A lot of docs follow tumor markers (a blood test) religiously to indicate recurrance early, while others, mine included, don't use them at all because they feel have too many false positives and many instances of false negatives. All we can do is go with what seems best for each of us at the moment.

Good luck, and let us know any info you come up with!

Mabel,

Di gave you a very good response! It's sort of a "damned if you do and damned if you don't" spot! If only life supplied a contract, we'd know what the rules were and be sure of the outcomes! Now, that would be great!!

Sadly, however, we are left on our own. Sometimes we are very wise and other times not so much! So we do our best, make mistakes, learn better, and go on to the next challenge.

If you have two doctors in disagreement, it might be time to seek a third opinion and to do some research on your own. Eventually, you will reach a place where you feel secure enough to trust. When you do, go with it and don't look back. The angels can't do more than their best, right?

Know that Pinkie will be there, filled with all of us to escort you to your appointment on Monday. Please let us know how you are doing and what you decide. Okay?

blessings.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply to me. It's so nice to find how much support is out there.
I have seen my surgeon and he is very pleased with how I'm going. He didn't expect to see me so well this far along. It makes me feel good to think that I am doing so well even though they did not expect me to. I think the positive side is best.
He said that there is no point in adding to my body's radiation
levels by doing any scans at this stage and he also said "where would we concentrate the scanning".I'm quite happy to go with his advice and to continue doing things that make me happy and not getting down about the cancer and what it has done to me. There is too much to enjoy in life to allow the negatives to take over.
Many thanks once again and I'll enjoy keeping in touch.

Thank you all. It's great to be able to discuss these things with people who care and understand.
I've finally realised what Pinkie is! I was wondering where you all were and how good that you all supported each other with Pinkie as I have to drive 3 hours for treatments and oncology visits and I thought you were all very lucky that you had Pinkie to bring you all together. Now I realise that Pinkie and all of you are there for each and every one of us! I must be a bit slow! That's a wonderful thing to do for everyone.
