Lupus can be fatal, yes. It isn't common with the newer treatments. Most people with lupus live a normal lifespan, but since severity can vary and the organs that it attacks also become damaged, there is that chance. It is hard to quantify that in numbers since lupus related complications could be caused by other factors. I think the current estimate is around 10% of patients with lupus will have a premature death due to lupus. (Don't quote me on that, I am not a medical professional or have stats handy)

Here is more information on Lupus. Let me stress again that MOST people do not die from lupus. You also need to talk to your doctor or if you are a caregiver, to the patient's doctor to know more about the particular complications faced in your case.
