Hi. Im new on here. I will try to make this short and sweet. I have battled IBS my ENTIRE life. Im 37 now, but in my teen years, I had polyps removed, and at 28, my gall bladder went bye-bye. My symptoms have never improved. Its a cycle of remit-relapse. In December, I was checked extensively for MS due to severe sacroiliac joint pain, numbness and tingling and a host of other issues. I had a stomach virus in June, got better, then I started having IBS again. I have been getting visibly bloated, fatigued beyong belief, and generally barfy feeling. On July 28, I passed out at work, and was taken to the ER via ambulance. They x-rayed my abdomen and found that my small intestine was severely inflamed. They gave me some Zofran, patted my head and sent me home. My GP referred me to a GI, who is awesome by the way. Gastroscopy revealed coffee ground blood in stomach but no ulcers, and the IBS saga continuous.I do have odd looking stools with mucous and other things that don't look quite right, diarrhea most of the time, and the formed stools are ribbony thin, and a complete waste of time, but no blood. Im sick of feeling crappy!!!! no pun intended. It doesnt matter what I eat. I know I am going to blow up and feel like crap later. I have complete faith in my GI doc, and he promises me we will find whatever it is. So far, we have narrowed it down to severe IBS, Celiac disease, and possibly Crohn's. I just got blood work done today for Celiac disease. Also, I can sleep for 15 hours and still feel lousy, my hips and knees hurt constantly, I am always crampy and farty, and gett bummed out without knowing why and a list of other things. Why would my small bowel be inflamed enough to show up on an x-ray? My barium swallow was normal, except for the fact that it made me puke all day long afterwards. My thyroid is ok. Im not underweight by any means. In fact, I could lose a few, but my hands swell up like crazy, and when that subsides, I pee like a race horse, I'm ok for few days, then the cycle repeats. I'm not always in severe pain, but I have a constant abdominal sensation that is pressure-like, then erupts into pain. I am scared to death! I know worrrying doesn't help. Does this sound like IBS, Celiac, or Crohn's to any one? I would appreciate your help and input so much. I know I am not alone out here! Thank you so so much

I recently took the blood test for Celiac on my recommendation to my Rheumatologist (I have RA among other fun things). Turns out I do have Celiac which now explains the RA. To answer your question, I have nearly all of the issues you've described. Hopefully you'll get the results on the CD blood panel soon and will know. In the interim, since you've already had the blood drawn, you could try eliminating wheat and wheat gluten from your diet to see if you get relief. It may take several days to a few weeks before you notice improvement.

I've just started yesterday trying to eliminate gluten. Going out to eat is a real pain. I just went through 3 restaurant menus online to find one that had some choices for me - who wants to go home hungry, right? Anyway, best of luck and hope things work out for you!

I did a some researching online about what foods are safe for gluten sensitive person, and to be quite honest, it doesnt seem that bad! There are lot of safe foods that are actually on my all-time favorites list. Potatos!!! YAY!!!!! Baked with butter and sour cream. Also, alot of food companies are trying to accomodate the needs of CD sufferers, so at least there is growing awareness. One must be careful, however, that these gluten free products weren't produced on the same line as some of their gluten containing products, even if they wash everything down. The best bet is to cook at home....and I hate cooking. Eating out in restaurants has always been a simple pleasure for me and almost everyone I know. If my blood test is positive, I don't want to give that up. It will be a challenge, but I can handle it. I am ready to give a gluten free diet a shot. If it does what I hope it will do, I can get off of this Gabapentin and Nortriptyline hopefully for good and stop scoping out the restrooms first thing everywhere I go. That may be an unrealistic expectation, but then again, I don't expect it to happen overnight. Its a step in the right direction

Dear TheKareBear,
You sound a lot like me! Let me first explain what I've been through. I've had my gallbladder out. I'm on a medication for my stomach because I was having acid reflux and stomach pain and it was hard to eat anything without feeling bad. Prilosec or Omeprozole is the generic name. Then I go through bouts of retaining water it's ridicious every month. I'm tired too all the time. I make myself get out of bed. I have too. I've been diagnosed with IBS many years ago. The pain your describing in your hips and legs is what I feel and it's HORRIBLE! I'm just now researching Celiac because that sounds like what I'm dealing with.

One thing that caught my eye when I read about Celiac Disease is the nutrients are reduced when someone has celiac. It can cause Malabsorption and vitamin and mineral deficiences and can include, weight loss, fluid retention, anemia, osteoporosis, bruising easy, nerve damage, and muscle weakness. I also have cramping in my joints.
I thought at first it was my monthly cycle, but I don't have periods because I had a hysterectomy years ago and just figured I was just getting bloating. Now that I'm reading about Celiac Disease. This sounds a lot like how I'm feeling too and I want to get tested. One thing too is I was starving all the time. But then when I did eat I was in the bathroom right after I ate and not knowing why. Have you been tested for allergies to foods? Why I ask that is because I'm allergic to Wheat, Corn and Soy and eating these can cause effects too. People who've been diagnosed with Celiac Disease can have symptoms of Lactose Intolerence. That's another thing I'm going to have to look into to see if I have that also. I looked online and found there's a book by William G. Crook, M.D. called, "The Yeast Connection" and another book called, "Detecting Your Hidden Allergies". You're not alone and "Thank You" for posting this because I'm right there with you in this battle to be well. Hang in there and hope I helped some.

Our problems do sound identical, right down to the Rx for Omeprazole! THAT is how I know that this is NOT in my head! Thank goodness my doctor thinks that too. This thing has taken over my entire body, even my vision! I have a blind spot in my right eye that comes and goes, which is a real treat when I am trying to drive. I am still waiting for my blood test to come back, but in the meantime, I am going gluten free just to see if I can tell any difference. Nothing yet, but I know it takes a few days. About the fluid retention..I hate it! I have long skinny bony fingers, but when my hands swell, they look like bratwursts! I thought I was going to have to cut my rings off a couple of times. I read that Celiac disease can also RESULT in obesity. I thought this was interesting because some people with eat simply can't stop eating, and that, along with water retention, results in weight gain. Obesity is just another manifestation of dietary deficiencies. I remember that book "The Yeast Connection". My mom bought it back in the 80's when SHE was having some unexplained issues...of course she doesnt remember what they were, but almost everybody in my family has some kind of screwed up bowel..and I mean each and every one of us! I am the first to be tested for Celiac. I will know in a few days. I cant stress enough how awesome my doc is. He is really being aggressive with this..and his sense of humor is very disarming! I love it! I havent considered the possibility of a corn and soy allergy. That one will be tough to swallow. I love corn. I do however tend to blow up when I consume milk or ice cream. I havent noticed it with cheese.....yet. Like you, I force myself to get out of bed. I force myself to go to work and force myself to at least act like I care..and it is NOT because I am depressed! If anything, I am depressed because I am not myself, and I want my normal self back! I'm sick of running to the bathroom and sick of worrying about pooping my pants! Sick of feeling sick!!! I have a colonoscopy coming up on the 10th to check to see if the polyps have come back. I hate these things I was promised some really good anesthesia. Thanks for input I hate that you are suffering, but I am glad I am not alone!! I will hang in there because I know I will have some answers soon

I am so sorry you are having all these problems I really understand am having many of them myself. Glad you found a good Doctor you can trust. I had a sub-total collectomy years ago and am having a new problems with pain now too and generally feeling tired and awful. I have tried the Gluten free diet for the past five months and feel a little less bloated and crampy. None of my Doctor's seem to want to look in to it. What test did they do for you? I wish I could help somehow living this way is awful sometimes. I have just started muscle relaxants for the problems which seem to begin with a bowel movement/ Muscle spasms. They have been like a band aid for the pain. Hope you get some answers and can feel better soon!

My son was recently diagnosed with Celiacs Disease. We are on our 3rd week of diet change, yes there are a lot of products out there as well as a lot of everyday things that are allowable on a gluten free diet. Grocery shopping is tedious right now but i'm sure as time gos on it will get better. Celiacs is a genetic disease. My son's Pediatric GI Specialist recommended that all 1st generation family members have the inital test run, starting with his dad & I. The blood test for CD is called "TISSUE TRANSGLUTAMINASE" this will give your Dr a baseline of whether to direct you to a GI Specialist or look for other possibilities. My son's Dr told us that normal levels of this test should be around 20, my sons level was 150. He also told us of several confirmed cases that by not following a STRICT Gluten Free Diet, where gluten had caused an abdominal GI Cancer later in life. Celiacs goes undiagnosed in families for decades. It's only a blood test, so by all means with any of the systoms it does not hurt to check.

My heart breaks for my son as at 11yrs old this is a tough adjustment. He went from loving the school lunches to now packing everyday. Have yet to find a gluten free bread that makes a good peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

As a mother, I am on a mission to join every group I can and every chat I can to continue my research and explore every option available to my son.

I have lived with IBS myself for the past 12 years, have yet to have my CD test done (but will very soon). It's recommended that diet be changed for the whole family to make it easier for the family member with CD and that is my current goal. Not an easy on, but definately an attainable one.

Hope you all get the answers you deserve real soon to be able to treat your symtoms properly and are able to enjoy life!!

Thank you so very much for the information and I am so sorry about your son.
Finding bread for a sandwich that tastes good is a problem or pizza crust. My husband has gone on this deit with me it does make it easier. We are actually enjoying this diet for the most part. If I find a good bread I will let you know. We have friends that are good cooks and they have been experimenting with making us good bread.
I have been on this diet for at least 5 months now I wonder if I can be off of gluten this long and still take the blood test. Thank you again for the information. I have a Doctor's appointment in a few weeks and I will ask!
I will be hoping that the diet goes well for your son and your whole family. Linda

Hey! I have a 7 year old son that for the past 6-7 wks has been having problems with his stomache! Let me go back for at least a year, he has had problems with an upset stomache and we always thought it was a stomache virus of some sort! the drs said it couldve been excessive amount of mucus etc.!! Since then this past june he had surg for adnoids, tubes and tonsils removed! and thank God no problems since then with mucus! But the stomache problem is worsening! About 7 wks ago severe case of vomiting and diarrhea! 3 wks later again, 1 wk later again now this weekend for the past two days severe cramping and diarrhea! I will go to the dr tomorrow and hopefully get some answers soon! He is mildly overweight and is a very picky eater with limited choices!! Like alot of kids! I am trying not to worry but its hard u know?! My best friend which is 32 was diagnosed with celiacs 4-5 months ago and i know alot about it but not in children! If you know or have experience which would help please let me know! I know there is probably things im leaving out but my mind is racing! any questions let me know! I have been fighting the diarehha for 7 years now. The doctor said it was IBS/SPATIC COLON . He did not however test me for any thing. I have found a terrific Digestive Diease Doctor now that tested my blood , stool , colon and intestines. I have a blood marker of 6 and Celiac is a 9. So I am considered in the gray area. No damage to my intestines, thank God .Inflamation through out my digestive tract, like you. I do however have Barrets Disease. He immediatly took me off gluten, dairy, tomatoes, chocolate, egges and alcohol. It has been six weeks now and I am doing so much better. Regular bowl movements with diarehha only twice in that period. I was having it 3 or 4 days a week and going 6-7 times each day. and like you it didn't matter what i ate....or so I thought. I had all the systoms you do. Find a good doctor...you can be helped. Dairy products cause inflamation. It is a total life change but it is worth not spending all my time day and nite in the toliet.

Not to confuse you more, but something to think about. My blood test came back negative for Celiac. However I had all classic symptoms of it. I went on the GF diet any ways because there was nothing else that fit. I feel fantastic! Many people are gluten intolerant and not Celiac, however, not all doctors are keen on this because there is test. Doctors are scientists and scientists need black and white proof. The only way to diagnosis gluten intolerance is dietary change and by exclusion of other disorders.

Also, make sure you research Celiac well. There are many misconceptions about Celiac including being skinny. 50 of people diagnosed are over weight or obese. It's all how you handle the non-absorption of nutrients. Some people loose wieght and others gain it by eating too much of foods that are able to be absorbed (i.e. fat!)

Best of luck..hope you feel better because

I just got back the Blood Tests results which my Doctor decided to do even though we have been Gluten Free for 6 months and very vary careful about it. The result was negative. So he has me back eating Gluten for a month or so. I am not doing well and can have D. after eating a gluten sandwich or pizza. I wonder if this is because we have introduced Gluten back into our diet again or if I am sensitive to Gluten or have Ceiliacs. I can not wait to re take the test again. Thank you for any in information anyone can give!
