My 8 Year old with tummy problems

Hello,

I am glad to have found this blog and hope that this can help me help my daughter. My daughter has had tummy issues for the past two years. in 2011 her pediatrician thought it was acid in her stomach and prescribed Pepcid, that wasn't the issue, then in 2012 he said she probably just has IBS. She also had eczema on most of her body, we have it under control and its not red just raised tiny bumps. It has become an everyday thing where she will tell me that her tummy hurts, burns, she always has to use the bathroom, multiple times especially when eating. She has diarrhea often or it is soft stool and even sometimes she feels that she has to go and nothing. Her tummy is always bothering her even when not eating. Her hands are always folded at the the waist and is complaining. I had enough and took her back to her ped and now finally we have an apt with a GI on Thursday that I am hoping can shed some light. I have been researching Celiac and think that this is what my little girl could have. My question is what are some tests that can show if gluten is her problem. I can most defiantly tell you that when she eats gluten foods she has issues immediately.

There are a number of tests that can be done. With the majority of them your daughter is going to have to stay on gluten while she's being diagnosed otherwise I'd say take her off gluten and see what happens.

You can do an IgA/IgG gliadin blood test, which may or may not pop positive if she is positive. But it's also possible to come up with a false negative. Please keep that in mind. The definitive one in most docs minds is the biopsy, but in some cases that can also come back as negative when someone is actually positive for gluten issues, unfortunately.

Ask the doc to do genetic testing for gluten issues even if they're going to do other tests. If he/she won't do it, go to enterolab.com and order the genetic test. It's not prohibitively expensive and it's worth it to find out if someone is carrying either celiac or gluten-sensitive genes. Far too many people go for years before true diagnosis is made and that's sad.

Make sure to check to see if any gluten issues run in either side of the family, which could make finding out if gluten is the issue a lot easier.
