Celicac Disease & Food Allergies

I have 2 daughters with several life threatening food allergies- gluten is NOT one of them. I have suffered from migraines for the past 3 years & cannot pinpoint a reason. I have had psoriasis all my life (auto immune) which has spread over the past couple of years. I was reading in Living Without Magazine in 2 different articles about people who suffered with undiagnosed migraines before finding out they had Celiac Disease. With having a family history of food allergies & auto immune disorder- do you think that I should be tested for Celiac? I am just not that familiar with the disease. Typical food allergies-that I know A LOT about, but this is new to me. Thanks for any advise you may have.

I would really suggest you DO get tested for celiac disease. You'd be surprised at just how often adults are finding out that they have problems with wheat, rye and barley. If you're going to do the blood test, make sure they check total IgA, IgA and IgG gliadin and transglutaminase.

Hi! I have had migraines with aura since I was 10 (at least). Two mos. ago someone mentioned to me the gluten connection to migraines and autoimmune disorders. I never heard of the gluten connection before, after Thangsgiving, and suffering 3 migraines in two days I quit gluten. (Two months on the 28th of Jan). I have had NO headaches, NO joint pain, haven't had to take even a tylenol for anything!! I cook everything from scratch so the transition to gluten-free was relatively easy for me. I also have thyroid issues and take med. every day for it. (Which is supposedly caused from gluten inflamation too!) I went to the library and took out every book related to gluten intolerance and bought 3 books including a recipe book for baking breads, etc. The more you read about it the more you will know and be surprised at the connections! You may not have Celiac per say, but may in fact be gluten-intolerant. I think that is the my situation, because it was exactly 4 hours after eating gluten that I would get the aura....but no headache! When I young I would get the aura and then the headache. Hope this helps you I know full well how hopeless you an feel over migraines....I did read also about someone who had the exact reaction to CORN products. You have to be diligent in identifying the foods that set it off. I had already eliminated wines, chocolate, and all the other so-call triggers.....but NEVER gluten! Who would have guessed whole wheat bread could be killing you??????

I was diagnosed with Psoriasis when I was about 8 years old, and started having terrible migraines, for which they haven't diagnosed anything, at age 15...so about 3 years as well. Recently I have been diagnosed with IBS, but the treatments aren't working, so they want to test me for Celiac's. I also have a tree nut allergy.

I was just wondering (since this is a month old already) if you had been tested and how your results came back.

I suffered from headaches my whole life - and only after I found out I had a gluten intolerance, did I get relief from my headaches! I can tell you almost immediately if I've eaten something I shouldn't have - from the way my body reacts and the ensuing headache!!

I strongly suggest you have them tested for Celiac disease. I had HORRIBLE migraines -still sometimes do- but it's worth getting them tested if you have a family history of problems. I hope they don't have it but at the same time I really hope you guy's can figure out what's going on.

I am recently diagnosed after suffering severe nausea preceded by a headache, and sometimes it takes Zofran and time before I feel ok to function. I feel it has worsened with each time I don't follow the diet.

I am being tested now for Celiac's because I was diagnosed with crohn's several years ago, IBS and ulcerative colitis but I, too, have migraines and don't know why...I also have been tested and am positive for Eppstein Barr Syndrome so I don't know if that affects these symptoms or not..anyone with any information please advise

CalGal37 replied to mkttygrl9's response:
Mkttygrl, in the setting I am in, we see quite a number of individuals with unexplained migraines that is finally traced back to gluten issues. Make sure they check both IgA and IgG levels since it can either be related to an 'intolerance' to gluten or to true celiac disease. Non-celiac related gluten intolerance is now recognized to be a 'full-blown' issue. I believe the leading celiac specialists just got together (in Oslo?) and have finally given it the 'stamp of official approval' although hundreds of thousands of people have known that fact for years.

If all they're doing is deciding if you have gluten issues via a biopsy, don't stop there, please. That biopsy is not the 'do all and end all' of diagnosis. Double-check and triple check since it's suggested that celiac and forms of IBD are gene linked.
