Symptoms of Celiac disease? Afraid I have it. Mother and Uncle both have severe Celiac disease.

Hi there.
The last 2-3 weeks I've been extremely tired, and it's gotten particularly worse over the last week. I'll get 8-9 hours sleep, and then after 4 or 5 hours of my day at work, i'll become exhausted and basically want to sleep again. Even if sleep for 12 hours I'm still exhausted.
Secondly, I have a lot of gas and it smells quite terrible. (as has always been the case with my gas- much worse than most peoples smells).
I've also had fairly constant patches of diarrhea which are on and off.
I'm a quite healthy person for the most part and I exercise regularly. I went to the doctor today and told him of the symptoms i'm having and placed importance on how tired I've been. I didn't link the fact that my mother and her brother both have celiac disease in quite a serious form (if my mum at a load of bread she would die).
I have alot of gluten in my diet for the most part (pasta, toast, cakes/donuts etc ( i eat a donut a day everyday pretty much), and i'm wondering if anyone here had similar symptoms to mine before they were diagnosed or became suspicious they had Celiac's.
My doctor said I should get a blood test after fasting for 12 hours tomorrow but I failed to mention that it could have been Celiac's disease because i'm so used to my stomach playing up it didn't occur to me that it might be linked to the tiredness through celiac.
I just wasn't sure if sometimes Celiac's is 'hiding' in your body and decides to come out. I went on a long holiday to the USA and it was quite tiring and I'm wondering if the stress of the holiday combined with coming back to a busy work schedule could have triggered my genetic history...
please help i'm really worried, the exhaustion i'm going through is unlike anything i've ever experienced and I hope other people have had these symptoms too.
thanks for your help...

My husband had symptoms very similar to what you're describing and anytime he gets 'hit' with gluten now even when he's very cautious, the fatigue is enormous.

Make sure when you get that blood work done that you ask to be tested for celiac disease.

Hi there,
thank you for your response. Can I ask you what age your husband was diagnosed and if he suddenly developed the disease and the suddne exhaustion? I am 26 and I haven't had symptoms this strong before.

Do you know if having Celiac makes it harder to have kids (any personal experience?), I'm reading alot of stuff saying that Celiac males have very low sperm counts...

thanks so much for your help. I am getting tested for it tomorrow actually.

He was 50 when we found out he 'had' it. The only other symptoms he had for years was a feeling of slightly 'not digesting' some foods when he ate. And he'd have bowel movements every 3 days - which he considered normal since that had been his pattern for all of his life.

When he was 50 the fatigue hit BIG time. And there are any number of articles in both journals and the popular literature now that are alluding to the fact there may be a lot of 'silent celiac's' in the population. Those are adults that suddenly seem to 'pop up' with the problem. No one knows why, but I can tell you for my work setting, which is medical, we're seeing more and more adults - from 20 to 70 - who are being diagnosed.

Aussie, if your results come back negative, PLEASE consider going GF and see how you feel. The tests aren't 100% and sometimes the ONLY way to be absolutely sure is via an exclusion diet.

There are some studies that say celiac can affect men and women when it comes to conceiving, but it's not something that seems to be a universal fact.

Hi Aussie,
Facts I've learned from Celiac sites & various conversations. Genetics show hereditary from parents & secondary members. Some people have gluten intolerance others as myself are diag. w/Celiac. Yes, get blood work from a GI doctor who knows the special tests. Afterwards for a confirmed diag. follow up w/a Colonoscopy & EGD w/biopsies. I'm 66 yrs old & was diag. in Jan. Over 20 yrs ago starting w/lactose intolerances & escalulating gradually from there. Mid 90s started w/pain, cramping & diah. after eating some foods. The last 3 yrs have been dramatically worse indicating malnutrition, done loss, fatigue to exhaustion & others. Some people do not experience symptoms at all. There are over 300 as everyone is different. Celiacs is an autoimmune disease effecting the entire body therefore many wide spread symptoms. Stop eating foods from the grains therefore anything made w/flour & see if the digestive problems ease up. It is well worth it & a must if you have Celiac. Others will give more insites as they log on & we're all here to support each other. Keep asking questions & that will help you understand. Celiac.com, Celiac. org, will help & there are many others. Hugs

thanks so much for the reply!
I think the scariest thing for me was the numbing in my arms and sometimes legs. I thought that this could never be related to celiac but it is a common symptom. I guess the overall sensation is like having a 20 pound weight sitting in your stomach, combined with bad gas and light headedness- even if I've only eaten a piece of bread.

I got my blood test done 2 days ago so hopefully it will be ready today and I can get some news. Will keep you informed. I already started a gluten free diet 2 days ago but i'm still feeling bloated- i'm assuming it takes a while for your stomach to react positively after so much gluten over the years.
thanks again, your input is so helpful!

Aussie, if you stay 'clean' within a couple of weeks you're going to see a change if the problem is gluten. I watch people who go through this as their moods and bodies change and it never ceases to amaze me. We've also had a couple of cases in which the tests were negative but the people felt so much better off gluten that they continued being gluten-free with great results. My personal opinion is we just don't have the technology yet that will truly say yes or no 'you've got it.' Even the duodenal biopsy can be flawed. I like the fecal antibody test better than most of them for providing reliable results. IMO, that, coupled with the gene test is the best 'on the market.'

Hopefully in the future testing will improve - we'll see.

Please let us know how things go.

I had a lot of the same things you aretalking about prior to diagnoses of celiac...but a lot of what you are talking about sounds more like thyroid issues. I would have that checked too. just a thought

hi aussie,

I too have been having the same problems since sept 23rd. i've lost 10-15 pounds. I'm gassy, nauseous, in pain, tired, and just annoyed and scared. I've been to the hospital and many other doctors and am just (within the last 1 or 2 weeks) figuring out that I could have celiac disease. as far as i know, no one else in my family has it. I just wanted to feel your pain and hope that you get the answers you need. I had the EGD this past saturday and will get my results next tuesday. I can't wait! i've been sick for months and just want answers. In the meantime i made a trip to wholefoods today and i'm going gluten free.

Hi guys,
It turns out I was diagnosed with Giardia,
and have two negative Celiac tests done since I last posted.
I hope this helps. It was from dirty water or seafood in Las vegas or Cancun, Mexico.
Put me out for 5 solid months, the recovery was worse than the Giardia itself.
Tingling, muscle spams, migraines, exhaustion.
Colonoscopy/endoscopy and only now am I starting to come better.
Also get checked for Lymes disease and thyroid problems and endogenous depression. I became quite depressed after 4 months of sickness.
